St. George native, Logan Binggeli, leads Red Bull Rampage in qualifier round

VIRGIN – Riders participating in the 2010 Red Bull Rampage rolled into town this week. Red Bull Rampage is in its sixth installment in Utah, and features the world’s best freeride mountain bikers taking on some of the most unforgiving, bone-breaking terrain on the planet.

Upon arriving at the course Gee Atherton, 2010 UCI Mountain Bike World Cup Champion said, “The first moment you see it is always kind of the most exciting point of the whole week, I think.  You’re always like a bit nervous you know, and it’s always exciting seeing it for the first time again.”

This extreme event was launched in 2001 and was held each year through 2004. The Red Bull Rampage took a five-year hiatus before returning to Utah in 2008.

The 2010 Red Bull Rampage is bound to be legendary. High on the sandstone ridge in the desert landscape above Virgin, Utah, 25 riders waited at the designated starting gate for their shot to careen across the brutal ridgeline, off sandstone ledges, down any line they dared to the finish line over 1,500 vertical feet below. Each rider was given two judged runs to demonstrate their skills.

This event is not for the faint of heart. Just accessing the event can be a demanding experience.  Spectators are required to traverse a 4-mile dirt road on foot or bike to reach the spectator area.  Spectators are advised to wear sunscreen and bring extra water and snacks. Weather conditions and terrain can be extreme.

After Friday’s qualifying round, 10 riders move on to Sunday’s Super Final. St. George native, Logan Binggeli, qualified in top spot in the qualifier. The top 15 riders from the 2008 event also received an invitation for a spot in the finals.
On Saturday, the qualified competitors will be allowed to practice and build their lines in preparation for the Super Finals. Athlete practice will be held from noon to 5 p.m.  Wrist bands are required to enter the event. Due to the popularity of this event, tickets are no longer available.
