SUSWA concert to benefit Dixie Care and Share

ST. GEORGE – A benefit concert will be held for the Dixie Care and Share by SUSWA, the Southern Utah Songwriters Association, on Oct. 13 at the Eccles Theater.

“It’s for a good cause,” said Rich Panessa, SUSWA president, “helping [Dixie Care and Share] do what they do best, helping people.”

Dixie Care and Share is a local, non-profit organization that offers many services to individuals and families who have fallen on hard times. Much more than a food bank, Dixie Care and Share offers emergency shelter, emergency clothing, showers, meals, transitional housing, and many other services for those in need. All of this is made possible through private donations and the help of volunteers.

“It is not subsidized by the government,” Wall said, and noted that as the hard times continue, demands for the help Dixie Care and Share offers continue to rise. Unfortunately, donations have also suffered due to the current economic down turn. This is where SUSWA plans to step in and make a difference.

SUSWA is also a non-profit organization. Wall commented that, “Because the city gives us generous grants each year to operate; we feel a responsibility to give back to the community whenever the opportunity arises.”

SUSWA has always toyed with the idea of doing something for Dixie Care and Share, Wall added, and last spring things finally came together.

“It’s this year’s big event [for SUSWA],” Panessa said, and expressed that the benefit concert was very important to him.

SUSWA itself was founded in 2002 by Yvonne Wall, Sam Payne, Loni Stookey, and others. Wall remarked that SUSWA’s principle purpose is to create a camaraderie and network among local musicians. The Association also works hard to promote these musicians and provide them with opportunities for public performance.

Artists associated with SUSWA can be seen and heard at Jazzy’s Rock’n Roll Grill each Friday night as a part of its “Friday Night Live” concert series. SUSWA also sponsors an “Open Mic” night at Jazzy’s each Wednesday night at 8 p.m.

SUSWA’s members featured at the Dixie Care and Share benefit concert will include acts like: the Honky Tonk Heroes, the Sam Lutui Band, and Random Simplicity, among others.

The concert itself will be held at the Eccles Theater on the campus of Dixie State College, 225 N 700 E, St. George, on Wednesday, Oct. 13, at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 each, with all net proceeds going to Dixie Care and Share.
