WASHINGTON CITY – A tractor-trailer filled with hay bales fell on its side while exiting Interstate 15 at the Green Springs Drive exit just before 7 p.m. on Oct. 16.
 
Brant Graff, a resident of St. George, saw the accident happen and was first on the scene.
 
“I was sitting at the light southbound on Buena Vista when I heard a noise and saw a truck trying to stop at the stop sign at the offramp,” Graff said. “He didn’t get all the way stopped. He slowed to 25 miles per hour or so, knew he wasn’t going to stop, ran the sign and turned, and of course, he just rolled over.”
 
The truck tipped over while turning right onto N. Green Springs Drive from the southbound off ramp of I-15.
 
The truck may have taken the turn too quickly, Graff said, and caused the heavy hay bales in the trailer to shift, making the truck fall over.
 
“I left the stop sign I was sitting at and drove down to the truck to make sure [the driver] was okay and to get people out of the way,” Graff said. “I called 911 and everything started happening.”
 
People climbed out of their cars to direct traffic and help the driver of the truck. Someone pulled aside the windshield of the truck to see if the driver was okay.
 
“I was the second person to the driver,” Graff said. “The driver said he couldn’t move and couldn’t get out. [Firefighters] got the Jaws of Life and pulled him out. I heard a paramedic say that [the driver] probably had a broken leg and a broken arm – that’s what they thought from the way he was acting when they pulled him out. They loaded him into the ambulance and took him away,” Graff said.
 
No one else was hurt.
 
Traffic on Green Springs Drive between Red Cliffs Drive and Red Hills Parkway is being directed onto I-15 while authorities remove the tractor-trailer from the road.
 
As of 10 p.m., the tractor-trailer is back on its wheels, but Green Springs Drive is still blocked while the highway patrol and people from Bracken’s Auto Tech and Tires arrange to tow it away.
