WASHINGTON COUNTY – Get ready to “Rock & Roll” August 10-13, at the 2011 Washington County Fair.

This year’s fair features two rock bands that will pay tribute to The Doors and Led Zeppelin in concert on Thursday and Friday night. Tickets are $10 per concert or $15 for both.

“The rock concerts will be the best,” Fair Director Wendy Sandberg said. “We have … had country bands and have not filled the stands. We have heard we have a rocker community and we hope to see each of them out.”

Fair board members have high hopes that the anticipated concerts will do just as well as the demolition derby.  The derby is a sold out event every year and takes place on Saturday night.  Tickets can be bought at washcofair.net, IFA or Play it Again Sports.

“Our biggest event is the demolition derby,” Sandberg said. “It is supposed to be bigger and better than ever this year.”

There will also be a car given away to the winner of the Minute to Win It competition on the indoor arena stage that will be held just before the demolition derby at 5 p.m. on Saturday.

The Washington County Fair, which was called a variety of names many years ago, officially began in 1950; therefore this year’s event is the 60th anniversary celebration.  The party will begin Wednesday at 7 p.m. with a ribbon cutting, cake, prizes, and balloons and is free to public.

Following the ribbon cutting ceremony groups and families can compete in a game of Family Feud to win a trip to the San Diego Zoo.

The three main stages at the Washington County fairgrounds will feature a diversity of entertainment from bands and a hypnotist to the world record holder for the most hoola hoops used at once.

Another highlight of this year’s fair is the “Walk on Water” attraction that will allow all ages to run, crawl, sit, and stand on water by climbing inside a plastic ball.  This attraction will be held on the grassy area at the entrance of the fairgrounds and costs $5 per person.

Also new this year is a Rock Band/Guitar Hero competition that all ages can enjoy.

Returning features of the Washington County Fair include: camel rides, stilt walking, bubble tower, food, carnival, livestock show, junior rodeo, baby contest, booths, exhibits, parade, and much more.

An event such as the Washington County Fair requires help from 30 board members and approximately 400 volunteers.  To become a volunteer call Carol Hollowell at 674-5757.

“The fair is so important to the area,” Sandberg said. “It is the biggest event that involves all 14 cities. Each mayor and city officials get tasks to complete and are provided an exhibit to display their city’s highlights.  Many kids can get involved through 4H by showcasing their talents and receive ribbons. The exhibits are the reason for the fair.”
