LA VERKIN – A fire destroyed a La Verkin home early this morning at 60 East 460 North.

According to a press release, the Hurricane Valley Fire & Rescue responded to the manufactured home just after 2 a.m. The home, four vehicles and a shed were fully engulfed in flames. The report said the fire was fanned by 25 MPH winds and a free-flowing natural gas line.

An adult in the home smelled the smoke and alerted the other two adults in the home. Nearby homes were also evacuated.

Several surrounding structures were in immediate danger to fire spread. The windblown fire had ignited one vehicle next to the home, three vehicles on the property immediately to the South, and a shed on the adjoining property to the east. Power poles, electrical wires and communication lines were also on fire.

Rocky Mountain Power arrived and de-energized the power lines at 0328 hours for safety and precautionary reasons. Winds continued to spread flame and burning embers covering a one block downwind area.

The fire loss was contained to the initial area immediately surrounding the structure of origin. The free flowing natural gas line was allowed to burn until Questar Gas arrived on scene, uncovered the gas line and stopped the flow of gas at approximately 0613 hours. The remaining fire was immediately extinguished.

Two adult occupants were treated on scene with one being transported to Dixie Regional Medical Center for minor breathing problems. No other injuries were reported. Power was restored to the area and crews are working to restore telephone, cable and internet lines. The occupants of the other homes in the area were allowed to return once the natural gas line was secured.

Thirty-nine firefighters from five agencies responded to assist; Hurricane Valley Fire, Hildale Fire, Leeds Area Fire, Washington City Public Safety, and the Utah State Fire Marshal’s Office. La Verkin Police and the Washington County Sheriff’s Office assisted with evacuations, traffic and crowd control.

The American Red Cross is in contact with the homeowner and occupants to offer their assistance.

Origin cause of fire is still under investigation.
