St. George Rotary awards for service to youth through Boy Scouts of America

ST. GEORGE – Dr. Allen Hilton and Eldon McArthur, members of the St. George Rotary Club, were presented with the Cliff Dochterman Award on January 30 in a ceremony conducted at the quarterly Club Assembly of the Rotary Club.

The Cliff Dochterman Award is Rotary’s highest award for service to youth through the Boy Scouts of America. The presentation is made by local Rotary clubs to recognize members who perform outstanding service to youth as volunteer scouting leaders.

The club’s president, Linda Baker, presented the award. She cited McArthur’s decades of distinguished service to youth in numerous positions and Dr. Hilton’s numerous years serving youth in unit, district and sector volunteer positions.

The award consists of a medal suspended on a blue and gold ribbon presented along with the award certificate.

McArthur has been a scout leader and supporter for nearly three quarters of a century. His responsibilities have included staffing and supporting BSA units as a chartered organization representative, and service as a long-time merit badge counselor. He is a past-president of the Rotary Club of St. George and a past district governor for Utah’s Rotary District 5420.

Hilton has been a member of the Rotary Club of St. George since 1987. He is currently serving on a club committee to start and sponsor a BSA Venturing Crew. His service as a scout leader began in Texas in the late 1970s when he served as a Varsity Scouts leader. Since1987, he has served continuously as an adult leader in numerous positions including chartered organization representative, scoutmaster, varsity scout coach, Order of the Arrow assistant adviser and adviser, district roundtable commissioner, and district commissioner. He currently serves as sector commissioner and assistant council commissioner for the Utah National Parks Council.

Both McArthur and Hilton are also actively involved in the club’s dictionary project each year. Hilton is active in international service including travel to Haiti to provide dental care to orphans. McArthur is renowned for his bread. He provides loaves regularly to friends, guests, and others. He has an excellent memory for the history of St. George and events and regales listeners with stories about events long past.
