ReStore implements latex paint recycling program; employment opportunities also available

Habitat for Humanity Restore

Habitat for Humanity of Southwest Utah’s ReStore continues ongoing efforts to divert reusable items from the landfill by developing new markets for recycled materials, through the implementation of a latex paint reblending program.

Grant funding from Washington County Solid Waste provided the ReStore the opportunity to purchase a quality paint mixing system.  The reblended interior and exterior latex paint became available for purchase in 1 and 5 gallon containers on Feb. 27.

As with any painting project, latex paint is often purchased in greater quantities than needed, and studies estimate that the average household stockpiles 1 to 3 gallons of leftover paint per year. In response, Habitat for Humanity of Southwest Utah’s ReStore will reblend latex paint offering a high-quality, economical product, called HabiPaint.

Tracy Sahleen, Habitat for Humanity of Southwest Utah’s ReStore Manager, feels launching the latex paint reblending program is as exciting as opening the Restore all over again.

“This program supports the very foundation of our store and affiliate; we are helping others on so many levels,” Salheen said.

In partnership with Washington County Solid Waste, Habitat for Humanity of Southwest Utah’s ReStore will regularly obtain paint intended for the landfill, thus enhancing the reblending program.

“We will be saving thousands of gallons of great paint from the landfill. Paint that was once loved by somebody will be repurposed by blending it into rich colors that somebody else will love,” Sahleen added.

In addition to obtaining paint from Washington County Solid Waste, Habitat for Humanity of Southwest Utah’s ReStore will now accept latex paint contributed by individual and commercial donors.

The ReStore is located at 267 East 1400 South, St George. For more information about this program, please contact Tracy Sahleen at 435-628-4041.  You can visit the ReStore’s Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/SWURestore or website stgeorgerestore.com.
