Disqualification means Dixie soccer still winless in region

ST. GEORGE — Dixie high school’s soccer club took a slight hit when they disqualified their recent win over Hurricane earlier this week.

Flyers coach Burt Myers explained that the matter had been settled by him personally after a careful examination of the state high school rules.

“Ultimately it was probably my fault,” Myers said. “We played an ineligible player without realizing she couldn’t play.”

Myers had no intention of utilizing the player for the game, but changed his mind shortly before kickoff.

“We thought she had accomplished her tasks at the school and thought she was eligible. But she wasn’t,” he said. “And without immediate access to the school at the time, I just took her word for it.”

The disqualification nixed the only Region 9 win for the Flyers, who are now 0-1-2 on the season, having tied Cedar 1-1 in their latest game.

“I told the girls Wednesday at practice what happened,” Myers said. “We went and tied a really great Cedar team. (The error) was unfortunate, but we’re just moving on.”

Hurricane, on the other hand, improved to 3-0 in region after the adjustment, marking its first win streak since 2010.
