WASHGINTON – On Friday Oct. 12, Utah Clean Cities Coalition, Mayor Ken Neilson and other Washington City officials will welcome the “Clean Across America & Back 2012 CNG Road Trip” to Utah at the Washington City Compressed Natural Gas station at 1 p.m. Washington City is a leader in moving energy independence forward in Southern Utah. Last March, the city opened a public access CNG station and began converting their fleet to CNG vehicles.
Antelope Valley Clean Cities Program Coordinator, Curtis Martin, along with CNGChat.com members Evelyn and Gary Corbitt have organized this cross-country and back CNG road trip involving Clean Cities Coalitions across 22 states and Washington, DC. The purpose of the road trip is to highlight the accessibility of CNG throughout the U.S., as well as its benefits as a cheaper, cleaner burning fuel that reduces our dependence on foreign oil. The goal is to run the trip exclusively on public access natural gas fueling stations to let the nation know there are alternatives to imported oil.
The road trip will kickoff on Oct. 11, at a National Alternative Fuel Vehicle Odyssey Day 2012 event in the Santa Monica, Calif., and will come back through our area to St. George on Oct. 30, and return to California on Nov. 1. They will be driving a new 2012 CNG Honda Civic, provided by American Honda in Torrance, Calif.
The Corbett’s will participate in AFV Odyssey Day events, public CNG fueling station grand openings, a press event at a natural gas drilling operation, tours of biogas plants and CNG conversion shops and more, as they travel across the country. In order to let the nation follow their progress, the car will be equipped with a GPS tracking system, supplied by GreenRoad Inc., as part of their fleet telematics solution for driver safety and fuel reduction.
“This CNG road trip will help raise the alternative fuel awareness of state governments, businesses, and consumers. It is important that people know there are other feasible options for transportation that can reduce our reliance on foreign oil, promote cleaner domestic fuels, create American jobs and help improve our air quality,” said Robin Erickson, Executive Director of Utah Clean Cities. “We’re teaching people to make sustainable choices for all the right reasons.”
