Game Preview Capsule: Dixie at Snow Canyon

GAME PREVIEW CAPSULE
Dixie (7-1, 4-1) at Snow Canyon (5-3, 2-2), tonight, 7 p.m.
Previous Meeting – Dixie 24, Snow Canyon 22 (Oct. 13, 2011)

FLYERS
Classification: 3A, Region 9
Coach: Blaine Monkres (23rd year, 164-87 overall)
Offense: Spread
Last week: Beat Cedar 47-28
Players to watch: LB Tyson Graff has really been playing well for Dixie. Along with Chris Abraham and Jesse Lambert, the Dixie defense is much improved, though they did give up 350 yards to Cedar last week. The Dixie D shut out Cedar in the third quarter. Letting stud QB/DB Blake Barney also helps this defense out.
PPG: 41.1
PAPG: 19.5

Trend: Dixie has won three straight since that heartbreaking loss to Hurricane. The toughest games were definitely in the middle of the season and the Flyers passed most of their tests. Now they need take care of business at SC and root for Desert Hills to beat Hurricane and give them a share of the region crown.

WARRIORS
Classification: 3A, Region 9
Coach: Jay Graft (eighth year, 37-39 overall)
Offense: I-back, pro-set
Last week: Lost to Desert Hills 42-0
Players to watch: What a jarring defeat last week to DH. But QB Mason Smith played well, despite a couple of turnovers. Rb Taylor Johanson and WR Cade Heward also stepped up against the Thunder. The Warriors need a big game from Mitch Phillips to compete tonight.
PPG: 26.9
PAPG: 21.1

Trend: That loss to Desert Hills was a bad one and there’s really no way to sugar-coat it. But the Warriors have two games left and may need to win them both to assure a playoff spot. It is senior night tonight and these SC seniors haven’t had a winning season at the varsity level. A win would assure them of their first one. It’s a big rivalry game with another looming large next week at Pine View.

GAME OUTLOOK
Yes, it’s a crosstown rivalry game and emotions will be running high. But these are two teams heading in opposite directions. Dixie has won three straight, while SC has lost two of three. The Flyers are averaging more than 40 points a game, while the Warriors got shut out last week. Dixie’s going to get its points tonight, so the only chance the Warriors have is to out-score the Flyers. That’s not likely to happen.

STGnews PREDICTION
Andy Griffin (32-5) — Dixie
Jeff Ames (32-5) — Dixie
