Dixie National Forest to implement prescribed burns in Cedar City, Paragonah areas

CEDAR CITY – Weather permitting, the Dixie National Forest Cedar City Ranger District will begin to implement a series of prescribed burns this week.

The burns are named the Henrie Knolls, Duck Creek and Edwards Spring prescribed fire projects. The areas to be burned are located five miles north of Duck Creek Village (Henrie Knolls), the greater Duck Creek, Strawberry and Swains Creek areas (Duck Creek) and nine miles northeast of Paragonah (Edwards Spring.)

These projects are designed to improve wildlife habitat and reduce dead wood debris while strengthening overall ecosystem health. Forests with less dead debris are far less susceptible to wildfire.

Ignition of these fires will continue from this month until April 2013 as weather, fuel conditions and air quality allow. Great care is taken to reduce the amount of smoke exposure from prescribed fire projects; strict guidelines set forth by the Division of Air Quality must be met and followed before any ignition can begin.

For more information about this prescribed fire, contact the Cedar City Ranger District at 435-865-3200.
