Dixie State College musical recitals showcase student talent

ST. GEORGE –The Dixie State College of Utah Brass, Strings and Guitar Chamber Ensemble will take to the stage for the first time this season on Nov. 27, followed by another recital from the Percussion Ensemble on Dec. 4.

Brass, Strings and Guitar Chamber Ensemble

The Brass, Strings and Guitar Chamber Ensemble recital will be held Nov. 27 at 7:30 p.m. in the Eccles Fine Arts Center Concert Hall on the DSC Campus. It will feature DSC music students who have been studying chamber music written for their respective instrument groups over the course of this semester.

Under the direction of Dr. Timothy Francis, the Brass Chamber Ensemble will spotlight performances by Cameron Beals, Daniel Chapman, Nathan Gursslin and Ryan Tommer on trumpet, Dr. Francis and Chapman on trombone, Robert Kuta and James Lachmar on tuba and Austin Paxman on horn. They will perform Irving Berlin’s classic “Alexander’s Ragtime Band,” Mendelssohn’s “Prelude and Fugue” and holiday favorites “Here Comes Santa Claus” and “We Wish You a Merry Christmas.”

The String Chamber Ensemble, conducted by Dr. Jim Hardy, will feature McKenzie Warren, Cassidy Jones and KateLyn Wall on violin, Kim Jones and Mattison Warren on cello and Beverly Anderson and Kaitlyn Stone on viola. They will perform two classical numbers, Shostakovich’s “Quartet #8“ and Dohnanyi’s “Serenade in C.”

Led by Lisle Crowley, the guitar ensemble features improvisation, blues and jazz in their concert. They will play “Scarborough Fair” by guitar major Isaac Gish and “Stay Forever” by guitar major Colter Lee.

Percussion Ensemble

The Percussion Ensemble will perform Dec. 4 at 7:30 p.m. in the Eccles Fine Arts Center Mainstage Theater. Led by DSC Music Department Chair Glenn Webb, they will perform “African Welcome Piece,” three authentic African dances composed by Michael Udow. Webb will perform a vibraphone concerto by Ney Rosauro and DSC theatre students will join the narrative “Preachers, Thieves and Acrobats” by John Gibson. Other selections include works by John Cage, Alan Hovhaness and Gordon Peters.
