New to Economic Summit: Local tech-oriented companies

ST. GEORGE – The organizers of the 2013 Washington County Economic Summit will address the misconception that Southern Utah has no tech sector with the new business showcase.

Dixie Technical Association Chair Josh Aikens said that candidates for public office in Utah have claimed there is no tech sector in Southern Utah, and that perception is untrue.

“We have a news flash for aspiring candidates looking for a cause,” he said. “Active, growing tech companies here solve business and consumer problems around the world.”

Fourteen of those companies will be featured in the showcase, including the global success Wilson Electronics. Wilson offers solutions to improve cell phone performance and has won multiple industry awards. Recently, their Sleek 4G-V was named an International CES Innovations 2013 Design and Engineering Awards honoree.

On the other end of the spectrum is Aikens’s own fledgling Referral IM, which after months of preparation in the Dixie State College of Utah ITRE business incubator, will celebrate the official launch of its cloud-based software product for the medical referral system.

Also featured in the showcase are technology-based companies Infosiftr, Watchdog, Forte Strong, CumulusBPO/Xtiri, Velocity Webworks, Innovation Simple, Rocketmade, OveractDev, InfoWest, TCN, Allconnect, CABOsoft and Contact Point. Washington County’s newest corporate expansion, Family Dollar, will be fielding questions and taking applications at the summit.

The business showcase is a new addition to the summit, now in its 16th year. It was established because “Visitors and locals alike sometimes have no idea how many high tech products and services are created right here,” Washington County Economic Development Director Scott Hirschi said.

The summit, which will be held Wednesday at the Dixie Center St. George, also includes speeches from Gov. Gary R. Herbert and business mogul Fraser Bullock, 11 breakout sessions and presentations. Registration is still open and may be done online.

Life coaching, SEO, phone service, Family Dollar warehouse technology and home security are not “tech” in the sense most people mean it….just sayin’…
