Commemorating Jesus: ‘Way of the Cross’ downtown St. George; STGnews Videocast and Photo Gallery

ST. GEORGE – Today a wooden cross was carried from the Bluff Street Park to the St. George Catholic Church and along the way made 15 stops for a quick lesson on the 15 milestones of Jesus’ walk with his cross.

The Stations of the Cross – also called Via Dolorosa, or Way of the Cross – is a devotion to the Passion of Christ set up into 14 and sometimes 15 milestones of Jesus’ walk with His cross. The 15 milestones, just to list a few, are Jesus’ condemnation to death, his carrying of the cross, falling for the first time, his dying on the cross, being laid in a tomb and resurrecting.

“It is a good way to share our faith with all Christians in St. George” said Father Martin Picos from the St. George Catholic Church.

Pastors, Reverends, Fathers and other church leaders alike took turns and carried the wooden cross over their shoulders being followed by nearly 200 people as they sang “Were You There” a cappella while walking from one station to the next.

“It’s the beginning of an Easter vigil,” said Rev. Lee Montgomery from Spirit of the Desert Episcopal Church in Kayenta. “We will spend today in prayer and meditation … and on Easter Sunday we celebrate.”
