Search and Rescue aids hikers in the Pine Valley Mountains

ST. GEORGE – The Washington County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue team was sent to the Pine Valley area Saturday afternoon after receiving a call for aid involving a couple hiking the Pine Valley Mountains.

Washington County Sheriff’s Deputy Darrell Cashin, deputy-liaison for the search and rescue team, said a call came in Saturday afternoon concerning a couple who had called 911 while hiking Brown’s Point Trail. After hiking for an estimated 20 miles, starting on Forsyth Trail and returning on Brown’s Point, the husband began to experience chest pains and became incapacitated.

The Pine Valley Fire Department and Enterprise EMS responded to the the initial call and subsequently contacted WCSSAR to aid in the operation.

The responders hiked up the trail and located the couple and began to treat the husband with an IV.

Due to the nature of the terrain, no ATVs or trucks could be brought in to bring the man out, Cashin said. A horse was acquired from a nearby equine center and taken up the trail. However, the man responded positively to the IV treatment and was able to walk out under his own power.

The search and rescue team’s involvement lasted for about five hours, Cashin said, with operations wrapping up late Saturday night/early Sunday morning.

Due to medical privacy laws, Cashin was unable to comment on the cause of the man’s chest pains.

A big thank you to all of our dedicated SAR individuals. These folks give up both personal and work time, to come to the aid of folks in distress. It often means money out of their pockets to do so. Not to mention all the training they do, and the things that they wind up paying for out of their own pockets. A more dedicated group would be very hard to find!
(No, I was not involved in this situation.)

I call it like I see it, Joyce. Many people hate me because of my stance on car wrecks. Oh well. . .
