SAN JUAN COUNTY – A body was found in the water in the Lake Canyon area of Lake Powell Wednesday afternoon. Lake Canyon is located just a few miles north of Hall’s Crossing in the San Juan County portion of the reservoir.

In a statement, the San Juan County Sheriff’s Office reported they and National Park Service rangers were made aware of the body around noon by boaters who had discovered it.

The body has been recovered and there is no evidence of foul play at this time according to the statement.

In September 2007 a couple was killed when a large slab of rock fell from an overhang landing on their small pontoon boat while they fished. Only the body of one of the victims, Mary Simmons, was ever recovered.

Authorities are hoping and believe that the body found today is that of the second victim, Donald Simmons of Calhan, of Colorado.

The body will be taken to the Utah Medical Examiner’s Office in Salt Lake City for an autopsy and identification.
