St. George Marathon Weekend Primer: Courses, spectator spots, mayor’s walk, Expo, events, road closures

ST. GEORGE – The St. George Marathon weekend is almost here for its 37th year.  The weekend is filled with Marathon activities for all, including two new events added this year, “Move it” Kids Fun Run and “I am ABLE.”

Runner’s World has designated the St. George Marathon as one of the ten most scenic, cream of the crop, fastest fall marathons in the United States. This year 7,600 runners plus each of their families are expected to fill the Washington County area.

Whether you are planning to run the marathon this year, participate in the many other marathon activities, or just want to know which roads will be closed, here is your Marathon weekend primer:

Altra Zero Drop Running & Fitness Expo

Friday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the Dixie Center, 1835 Convention Center Dr. in St. George.

The 37th annual Health & Fitness Expo will be held in conjunction with the St. George Marathon offering goods, products and services to over 20,000 visitors.

“Move it” Kids FUN RUN

Friday at 5 p.m. at the trailhead just under the freeway off ramp next to the Dixie Convention Center.

This newly added event gives children a chance to participate in this marathon weekend event. It is free to children of all ages, and no registration is required. Children can run one of three distances: 1 mile, 1/2 mile or 200 meters. Runners will receive a finisher’s medallion.

Pasta Dinner

Friday 4-8 p.m. inside the Dixie Center.

Everyone is welcome to this all-you-can-eat pasta dinner. The cost is $10 for adults and $5 for children.

Mayor’s Walk

Saturday from 7-8 a.m.

The one-hour Mayor’s walk begins at Bluff Street Park, 700 N. Bluff St., and ends at Vernon Worthen Park, 350 E. 300 S., in St. George. Bus service from Vernon Worthen back to Bluff Street Park will be provided beginning at 7:30 a.m.

Registration is open and unlimited at the Mayor’s Walk Booth at the Health & Fitness Expo held at the Dixie Center on Friday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., or at the Exchange Club’s Mayors Walk Pavilion at Bluff Street Park on Saturday at 6:30 a.m. before the walk begins.

Entry Fee is $10. Entrants will receive a Mayor`s Walk T-shirt, walker number, walk with the Mayor, and a scone. Hats and visors are available for $10 each.

St. George Marathon

Saturday race:

6:40 a.m. – Wheelchairs and handcranks, at the Central start line.

6:45 a.m. – Runners, at the Central start line.

Wheelchair and handcrank competitors cross the finish line at Vernon Worthern Park shortly after the Mayor’s Walk ends, around 8 a.m. and the first runners come in not long after that.

I am ABLE

7 a.m. – I am ABLE participants, at the Children’s Museum start line, 86 South Main.

This is a newly added event for all persons with disabilities in the community to have the unique opportunity to cross the marathon finish line. There will be two distances offered 3/4 mile and 260 meters. Individuals with disabilities but must be accompanied by one person without disabilities to support him/her the entire length of the event.

Note: There is no day-of-race registration for this event. Participants can register online here.

Teams of two will be charged a $10 registration fee. Registered participants will receive a T-shirt, Runner’s Bib & Mayor’s Walk Breakfast, and individuals with disabilities will be awarded a finisher’s medallion.

Awards Ceremony

Saturday at noon at the Vernon Worthen Park gazebo.

Overall award winners and finishers 1 through 4 in each division will be recognized on the St. George Marathon awards stage.
