GUNLOCK – A man was injured after the all-terrain vehicle he was riding flipped and sent the man tumbling down an 8-10-foot wash somewhere east of Motaqua Road, near Gunlock.

The police were notified of the accident at around 11:25 a.m. on Sunday. The 58-year-old man was riding with friends and had fallen behind the rest of the group when the accident happened, Washington County Sheriff’s Det. Nate Abbott said.

“The ATV veered off to the shoulder, hit a dirt patch, and flipped off the road,” Abbot said. Drugs and alcohol were not a factor, however officials think that a pre-existing medical condition may have played a factor in the accident, he said. “There may have been some sort of medical issue that caused him to veer to the right, which led him to being ejected.”

The man was transported by a Life Flight helicopter to Dixie Regional Medical Center. He did not know the nature or severity of the man’s injuries, Abbott said.

Safety when riding off-road vehicles is important. “I’d like to encourage people to use safe practices,” Abbot said. “Wear a helmet if possible, and let people know where you are going to be riding.”
