Walk to End Lupus Now, open affair in the park

ST. GEORGE – The Utah Chapter of the Lupus Foundation of America is hosting the Sixth Annual “Walk to End Lupus Now” at Vernon Worthen Park in St. George this Saturday, beginning at 11 a.m., expanding the event from Salt Lake City, where it has been held for the past five years.

imageWalk to End Lupus Now is designed to raise awareness about the autoimmune disease that can damage any part of the body including skin, joints and organs, present in many forms, confound professionals as to its cause, and present in a variety of symptoms. The Lupus Foundation offers support and services to people struggling with the disease in the St. George area.

The Walk is a fundraiser to benefit people in the local community living with lupus through programs of education, support, advocacy and research.

It will be a welcoming affair of the community this Saturday. St. George Mayor Dan McArthur will deliver an address as the Foundation’s guest speaker. Live music will be provided by Mister Hyde, and lunch will be provided by Chick-Fil-A and Blue Bunny Ice Cream to all walkers who raise $50 or more.

Additional fundraising will come through a drawing for overnight stay packages at Coral Hills and  Zion National Park. Participants in the walk and nonparticipants alike, are welcome to join in the activities at the park.

Registration is free, but in order to receive a Walk to End Lupus Now T-shirt and gift bag, participants must raise at least $50. Registration can be done online or beginning at 9 a.m. before the walk Saturday at Vernon Worthen Park.

For those willing to support this cause but unable to do the walk, the Foundation invites “Virtual Walkers” who may also register online. Teams have formed and more are encouraged to join in and to consider creating a “Team T-shirt” for this year’s walk. The best Team T-shirt will win a prize.

The Utah Chapter of the Lupus Foundation of America is part of a national force that devotes itself to research about this mysterious disease and provides support to those who suffer from it and their families. St. George had their inaugural meeting in June and continues to provide support to Southern Utah.
