‘The Bully Slayer’ local author releases sequel, ‘The Detention Bullies’

ST. GEORGE – Utah author and contributing columnist for St. George News,  T.S. Romney, released his most recent book, “The Legend of the Bully Slayer: The Detention Bullies,” at the end of December 2013. “The Detention Bullies” is a sequel to Romney’s first work, “The Legend of the Bully Slayer: The Dishonor Roll,” released in February 2012.

“My goal,” Romney said, “is to bring attention to a serious topic in a fun and entertaining way.  … I want kids to be able to enjoy the story and laugh at it and see that there are other options out there besides just feeling bad – they can laugh, they can form other friendships, they can have a hero in the Bully Slayer.”

Book preview

In Romney’s first book, “The Legend of the Bully Slayer: The Dishonor Roll,” protagonists Alex and Nic found they could counter “the honor roll,” a popular group given to exclusivity and bullying, by forming “the dishonor roll” – a group that allowed anyone to join in and have fun.

“They don’t care about money or status, it’s about being fun and being themselves,” Romney said of the kids who join in the dishonor roll. “It counterbalances the other group.”

There are new characters in “The Detention Bullies,” along with old favorites Alex and Nic who are now excited to enter the fourth grade. The two are now fast friends with Matheson, the Bully Slayer, who answered an ad on the back of a toilet in book one. Since Matheson stepped up and helped them end their problems with the dishonor roll, Alex and Nic are confident that this year there will be no dodgeball attacks, toilet swirlies, name calling or any of the other nefarious methods bullies use to torment them … until, as school is about to start, a horrifying discovery is made that will forever change the lives of the Bill Penn Elementary students.

Bully Slayer is simply written for kids as young as 6 years old to be able to apply deeper truths in there lives, whether they understand those truths or not.

A noted author and celebrated series

“The Dishonor Roll” received a tremendous response from kids all over the world, Romney said. In March 2013, it won “best break out author / book of 2012-2013” from Readers in Social Media, a book club and Facebook group out of New York, New York.

The positive reception led to Romney’s plan for two more books in the series, “The Legend of the Bully Slayer: The Detention Bullies,” being one of them.

Romney’s target audience for The Bully Slayer books began as ages 9-11, but he said that he has found adults are drawn to the books as well. “Adults say they enjoy the sarcasm, the satire,” he said.

“I have been writing since a young age and I credit my favorite author, Brandon Mull, for my inspiration.” Romney said. “It wasn’t until I read Mull’s work that I believed I even stood a chance of getting published. Here was an author who was local, had the same style writing as I did, and used humor in his stories. I had never witnessed that before,” he said. “Then, when my niece read the rough draft of the first book and begged me to write more, I took a chance.”

Officer Romney needs to read his own books. He is a big bully in la verkin as a cop, I think the power goes to his head. He tries to find reason to arrest people. He is very disrespectful officer.
