ST. GEORGE – The building that housed the Utah State University Washington County 4-H Extension was torched by a fire Wednesday and has temporarily left the extension without a home. No lives were lost in the fire, though a number of supplies and material used for the extension’s various programs were damaged or destroyed.
Despite the fire, the USU Extension is still operating, albeit in a reduced capacity. Individuals who wish to donate to the extension as it rebuilds its resources can do so through the USU website, as detailed below.
Still operating
“There are several options available for office space, and a decision on relocating the office should be determined by sometime next week,” Rick Heflebower, USU Extension Washington County director said.
“We are still operating, but on reduced level,” he said. “Our phone lines have been routed to a cell phone, so we are still able to answer phone calls. Starting Monday, our receptionist will be temporarily relocated just south of our former building at the Habitat Conservation Plan office. We will have a sign at our old building location to direct visitors there. There will be changes to our class schedules and locations, and we will get updated information out to those signed up as soon as we can.”
The building the USU Extension was located in is owned by Washington County. County Commissioner Alan Gardener said the county values the work of the extension and will do what it can to help find it a new home.

Donations
Individuals and organizations wanting to make a charitable donation to Washington County Extension may do so through a donation page on the USU website. Once the webpage is pulled up, select “Other” and specify “Washington County Extension.”

According to USU, the mission of its extensions “is to extend the university through research based, non-credit education programs to help Utahns enhance the quality of life in their homes and communities. With offices that serve every county in the state, Extension programs include 4-H and youth, home and family, finance and consumer life, business and economics, agriculture and natural resources, gardening and food, nutrition and health.”
