Making up the men’s Red Rock Running Company team was four members: Ryan Ripley, Nick Meis, Dominic Herniques and Forrest Jarvi. The team raced as preparation for racing season.

“Great running out here,” Meis said. “We were a little concerned last night when it was windy and rainy but it turned out to be a perfect day for running”

Which it was: a beautiful, clear day with a moderate winds and a warm 55 degrees at the finish line.

“We will be back next year,” Herniques said. “Well organized and a shout out goes out to all the volunteers.”

Each team could have up to five people, with each individual completing at least two legs of the relay. This year 128 teams participated in the race.

“The course makes it unique and special,” Aaron Metler, St. George Race Coordinator, said. “The atmosphere is also very different than other races. We do lots of social awards like shortest shorts and best decorated vehicle.”

Metler who came wearing red running tights and very short shorts himself, did not take home that award, but did hand the shortest shorts award to team Five for Running. The best decorated vehicle went to team Liger that had a stuffed animal with painted stripes  on top of their car the entire 50 miles.  Winning the best team name went to Victorious, wait for it … Secret. The best dressed went to the Rics, also known as the bishopric, who wore shirts and ties the entire race.

There were men, women, ultra and mixed categories with the mixed having at least two women on the team.

The ultra had two categories: the one person ultra and the two person ultra. There were two team finishers in the two person ultra, team Western Rad Runners which was made up of two women and Couples Retreat which was made up of a couple.

In the one person ultra category, four people were able to complete all 50 miles. Taking first place in the ultra category was Mihata at 7:07:21 with a pace of 8:17 per mile and a three-way tie going to Special Medals 1, Special Medals 2 and Special Medals 3, all finishing at 10:22:20.

The organization Addict II Athlete successfully completed the relay with five teams. AIIA is a group that helps its members maintain sobriety by replacing addiction with wholesome recreation. One of the AIIA relay teams featured children whose parents’ lives had been touched by addiction in some way.

After the relay, the runners and loved ones came to the Dixie Center St. George for a pasta banquet with bread sticks, lasagna, salad and cake. They refueled after the long run as they watched a slideshow with pictures of the event showing everyone’s costumes and the beautiful scenery they had traveled, after which there was an awards ceremony and drawing for prizes.
