ST. GEORGE – Looking for a volunteer opportunity? Look no further than the Hospital Thrift Store. Located at 76 W. St. George Blvd and staffed primarily by volunteers, the volunteer workforce at the thrift store is at the lowest level it has ever been, according to a statement issued by Dixe Regional Medical Center.
“All our profits help support the charitable mission of Dixie Regional Medical Center,” the thrift store’s assistant manager, Natalie Cripps, said. “We also do a lot of other things to help the community, we fill assistance vouchers for people in need from the Dixie Care & Share, the Dove Center, and the Washington County School District.”
The store has also started a community outreach partnership with The Learning Center for Families and is involved in recycling cardboard, metal, electronics and clothing. It has also partnered with another nonprofit to send clothing to third-world countries.
“That’s why I choose to work here,” Cripps said, “because of all our great causes.”
Len Levine volunteers at the thrift store as a way to repay the hospital’s generosity. Unable to work and unsure of how to take care of his medical expenses in the wake of a massive stroke, Dixie Regional made arrangements with Levine that ended up forgiving about half of his bill.
“I was so grateful that I wanted to do something to try and repay the hospital’s generosity,” Levine said. “So as soon as I was well enough I started volunteering at the Hospital Thrift Store.”
“We volunteer because we want to help people,” volunteer Mary Helen Anderson said. “Our service in this store helps a lot of people. It is very satisfying and gives me new energy.”
There are a variety of assignments and flexible hours available in eight, four, and two-hour shifts.
