News Short: Golfers undeterred by flames on Green Springs Golf Course

WASHINGTON – If you are seeing flames and black smoke billowing from the Green Springs Golf Course in Washington City today, you need not be alarmed. Members of the Washington County Fire Department are there to assist in a controlled burn on the golf course which began at noon today.

“About once a year, all of the golf courses in St. George as well as Washington burn off their palms and all the cattails,” Washington City Fire Chief Brent Hafen said.

Golfers on the golf course were not deterred and continued golfing amidst heavy, dense smoke surrounding the pile burn areas, albeit for a short term.

“Where there’s houses this close, we come and protect things and make sure it doesn’t singe any of the shrubbery or any of that kind of stuff,” Hafen said, “so, we just assist the golf course and we keep track of it and make sure that it all stays in hand.”

The controlled burn only lasted about 15 minutes in each of the individual burn areas.
