SOUTHERN UTAH – The National Weather Service has issued a “Wind Advisory” in effect from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. today for parts of Washington and Kane counties.
Affected areas
San Rafael Swell, south central Utah, Glen Canyon Recreation Area/Lake Powell, including the cities of Green River, Hanksville, Kanab, Escalante and Bullfrog.
Winds
Southwest 25-35 mph with gusts of 55 mph.
Timing
Developing midmorning and becoming strongest midafternoon through early evening before slackening.
Impacts
Strong crosswinds may impact travel along Highway 89 and Route 95. Operators of high profile vehicles should use extra caution. Dangerous boating conditions are forecast for Lake Powell. Blowing dust may cause local areas of reduced visibilities. Wind sensitive operations may be impacted.
Precautionary, preparedness actions
A wind advisory means that sustained wind speeds of at least 31 mph or gusts of 45 mph are expected. Motorists in the advisory area should be prepared for sudden gusty cross winds which can make driving difficult.
The strong winds will create dangerous boating conditions on area lakes. These winds will create very choppy water and generate large waves which could capsize or swamp small craft. For your personal safety, operators of small craft are urged to postpone their outings until the winds subside.
