Red Storm softball team tops 30 wins with sweep of Chaminade

ST. GEORGE – The Dixie State softball team swept Chaminade to get over the 30-win mark for the season. The Red Storm are on an 8-game winning streak after an 8-0 win in six innings in the opener and a 16-0 win in five innings in the nightcap Tuesday at Karl Brooks Field.

Aryn Feickert was the starting pitcher in the opener, allowing four hits and striking out seven batters to pick up her 15th win of the season and lower her ERA to 1.77.

dsulogoDSU struck first when Courtney Sherwin reached on a fielder’s choice. She later scored on a Marla Reiter double to right center field.

The Red Storm added three more in the third when Nicole Chavez and Courtney Hine both singled setting up a Sherwin sacrifice bunt. Later in the inning Sheila Gelter batted in two runs with a double to left center field. Gelter would later score on an RBI single by Bailee Freeland giving Dixie a 4-0 lead.

DSU scored at least one run in each of the next three innings, ending the sixth up 8-0. Pinch hitter Brooklyn Beardshear ended the game with the mercy-run rule with a shot to left center field.

In the second game the Red Storm started Michelle Duncan at pitcher. Duncan scattered five hits over four innings. Mattie Snow closed the final frame for the save.

Dixie again struck early in the first inning with a sacrifice bunt from Sherwin and a Gelter single to second base. In the second inning the Red Storm poured in 10 runs on six hits capitalizing on four Chaminade errors.

DSU would add four more runs before the game ended again with the mercy rule.

The victories improve Dixie to 31-8 overall, 19-5 in the Pac West, tieing them with California Baptist for first place. Chaminade falls to 7-23 overall, 6-20 in the Pac West.

Over the last four games the Red Storm pitching has allowed just one run. Dixie batting scored 49 runs on 53 hits during the four-games series.

The Red Storm now hit the road for four non-conference games, a doubleheader at Fort Lewis on Tuesday and a doubleheader at Colorado Mesa on Wednesday before returning back home on April 14 & 15 against conference foe BYU-Hawaii.
