DH’s Kim Monkres accepts job as assistant director of the UHSAA

MIDVALE – Kim Monkres won’t have to feel conflicted on game day anymore when football season rolls around this fall. Monkres, who has been athletic director at Desert Hills High School the past four years and whose husband Blaine is the head football coach at rival Dixie High School, will leave her post at D-Hills and become the newest UHSAA Assistant Director. Monkres will begin her role with the UHSAA prior to July 1.

When Dixie and Desert Hills met on the gridiron the past few years, Kim Monkres faced a dilemma — root for her school or root for her husband. Always dressed in the black and gold of the school she worked for, Kim would never openly admit to rooting for Dixie’s football team. When asked, she would just smile and change the subject. Now maybe she can don the Dixie blue if she so desires.

Kim will work in the Salt Lake area during the week and travel home on weekends. Blaine, who has had tremendous success as Dixie’s head football coach, including a state championship, said he has no plans of leaving his job with the Flyers.

“That was the first thing I thought of when I heard the news,” Dixie athletic director Mike Bair said. “But Blaine assures me he has no plans to go up there.”

Meanwhile, this is a tremendous career opportunity for Kim Monkres, who has served on the statewide Athletic Director’s Executive Committee. Her positions at Desert Hills have included hiring and training of coaches, managing the athletic department budget and tracking student-athlete eligibility. Prior to working at Desert Hills, Monkres was an Assistant Principal at Hurricane High School.

“I am so thankful for the opportunities I have had here in the Washington County School District,” Kim said. “I have loved my time at Desert Hills High School, and it is very difficult to leave the faculty, staff, students and community that I have grown to love.”

A long-time UHSAA drill team judge, Monkres has served on the UHSAA Drill Team Committee since 2011. She was an English teacher and Drill Team coach in the Weber School District at Bonneville High School from 2000 to 2008, where her teams were crowned 4A state champions in 2006 and 2008. She was the Utah Dance and Drill Association President from 2007 to 2008.

“Kim brings to the Association experience as a coach, official, athletic administrator and assistant principal. The knowledge and background in high school activities and event management have prepared her and provided the opportunity for this position. Her sound educational philosophy of education-based activities will be a tremendous asset to our 142 UHSAA member schools,” said UHSAA Executive Director Rob Cuff.

Monkres will serve as the director of Drill Team, Softball, Swimming & Diving, Tennis, Volleyball, and Music with the UHSAA. With a Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership from Southern Utah University, she will oversee the UHSAA sportsmanship, citizenship and student leadership programs for the Association’s 88,000 high school participants.

“I am excited to be working with the staff at the UHSAA. I look forward to learning so much from all of the directors and staff, and I also look forward to working with and supporting all of the high schools across the state,” she said.
