Where’s my team? Busy weekend as teams battle for titles

The quest for state titles continue this weekend for soccer, baseball, softball and tennis teams from Region 9. In the case of soccer and tennis, the quest concludes this Saturday.

The tennis state tournament is going on right now, with defending-champion Juan Diego as the favorite, but with strong doubles teams, including region champions Christian Davis and Clay Hardy (first doubles) and Preston Parmenter and Austin Hardy (second doubles), Desert Hills hopes to knock off the Soaring Eagle.

The tennis championships are taking place at Liberty Park in Salt Lake City. Dixie hopes to have a shot at Juan Diego as well. The Flyers have region champs in all three singles categories heading into state in senior Tevan Balian (first singles), junior Micah Alba (second) and senior Luke Heaton (third).

Here’s the tennis bracket.

Fans of the Dixie, Cedar and Pine View soccer teams can watch them play in the state semifinals today. Pine View and Cedar battle at 4 p.m. at Alta High School (southeastern Salt Lake Valley) and when that game is through, Dixie will kick it off with Juan Diego — at about 6:15 p.m. We’ll keep fans updated through Twitter (@oldschoolag) and will have a full report after the matches are complete. Don’t expect much scoring in either game as all four teams are known for their defenses.

Region 9’s baseball teams are involved in the first two rounds of the 3A State Tournament Saturday. Desert Hills gets to stay home, which means plenty of work for the home team in prepping the field. But at least the two-time region champs get home-field advantage and also don’t have to deal with weather issues that much of the rest of Utah is experiencing.

Speaking of which, Pine View’s game vs. Payson has been moved back to 11 a.m. (instead of 9 a.m.) due to field concerns and the forecast for cold weather. It has been rainy today up north and presumably the thinking is that a couple more hours of sunlight on the Payson field will help to dry it out. Plus, Pine View coach Mike Gargano said the weather prediction for 9 a.m. Saturday was 38 degrees. Brrrr!

Pine View’s schedule Saturday may be adjusted more, depending on weather and alternate field availability, so watch our Twitter feed and STGNews for updates.

Cedar and Canyon View are also up north with the Redmen taking on Juab at 11 a.m. at Juan Diego and the Falcons battling Carbon out at Grantsville.

Baseball moves to Utah Valley University next Thursday for the final few rounds and Saturday’s championship.

Here’s the baseball bracket.

In softball, Cedar is the region’s top seed and will be home Saturday, while Canyon View, Snow Canyon and Dixie are all on the road.

Cedar battles Carbon at 10 a.m. at the Lady Reds home field. The Falcons face North Sanpete all the way out in Vernal at Uintah High at 10 a.m. The Lady Warriors play at noon against Juab in the Tooele High pod. Dixie will face off vs. Region 12 champ Payson at the Lions home field at noon.

Softball moves to the Spansih Fork Softball Complex next Thursday through Saturday.

Here’s the softball bracket.

Also, Dixie State’s softball team is hosting the NCAA Division II West Regional here in St. George this weekend.

So, obviously there’s plenty going on for the avid sports fan. We’ll keep you posted on STGNews.com.
