Ann Costikyan Vinograde passed away peacefully at home on May 7, 2014. She was born in New York City on September 19, 1922 to Mary Stanley and Kevork Costikyan. She grew up in New York and later attended the University of Michigan, receiving an M.A. In Political Science. There, she met her future husband, Bernard Vinograde, and they eventually moved to Ames, Iowa, where Bernard taught Math at Iowa State University. After receiving her Masters degree at NYU in 1969, Ann also worked for ISU and taught Russian and Russian literature there until 1989, when they retired and moved to Kayenta in the St. George, Utah area, spending summers in Brian Head.
Ann visited Russia several times as part of ISU’s teacher exchange program. She was an avid reader of poetry, an accomplished rug-hooker, and an enthusiastic, highly-skilled backgammon player. Her love of the beauty of nature led to frequent hiking and fishing with her husband.
She is survived by four children: Alice and Barbara (twins), Peter and Polly; four grandchildren: Natalia, Catalina, Clara and Khaleila, and two great-grand-children: Camila and Julia.
She had a wonderful life, was endlessly curious, and was an interesting and amazing woman. We all have our precious memories of her. She was much loved and will be deeply missed by her friends and family.
A celebration of her life was held on Friday, May 9, 2014 at the Kayenta Desert Rose Labyrinth.
