ST. GEORGE — Angelina, Tex., beat Central Florida 8-5 Saturday afternoon to capture the 2014 National Junior College Athletic Association championship at the highly-regarded Canyons Softball Complex, culminating the four-day national event hosted by St. George City,

The Lady Roadrunners built an 8-1 lead in the “if necessary” game of the double-elimination tournament, then held off a Patriots rally to hoist the trophy Saturday evening. Angelina was a heavy underdog as the 10th-seed going into the tourney, but rushed through all competition to earn a shot at the title.

The eighth-seeded Patriots handed AC a 6-2 loss in the first championship game, but couldn’t rally against the ‘Runners in the second game.
