Memorial Day: Governor orders flags lowered

SALT LAKE CITY – Gov. Gary R. Herbert has authorized the lowering of the flag of the United States of America and the flag of the State of Utah on Monday in honor of Memorial Day.

“I hope everyone has the opportunity this Memorial Day to recognize and honor our military and veterans,” the governor said in a statement released to the media. “Please recognize the day for its original intent: remembering the men and women who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. No matter your plans this holiday weekend, please take time to show your gratitude for all those who have fought for freedom.”

The flags will be flown at half-staff on all state facilities from sunrise to noon on Monday.

Sen. Orrin Hatch also issued a statement urging Utahns to remember the true purpose of Memorial Day.

“Our military men and women and their families are true heroes, and it is a great honor and sacred duty to pay homage to them at every opportunity,” Hatch said. “One of the most humbling things I do as a United States senator is meet with veterans and remember those who have sacrificed so much for the freedoms so many Americans take for granted. As we gather with friends and family this weekend to celebrate Memorial Day, I hope we can all take a moment to understand the true meaning of this holiday and express sincere gratitude to our nation’s veterans that have paid the ultimate sacrifice in the name of freedom.”

That’s redundant. That provision is already outlined in federal law. US Code states in 4 USC 7(m) states the rules of raising and lowering the Flag on Memorial Day (and other such times).
