SOUTHERN UTAH — In the Republican Primary Election Tuesday, incumbent Sen. Evan Vickers effectively renewed his position as state senator for District 28, achieving victory over challenger Casey Anderson. With 67.1 percent of the vote, according to preliminary results which do not include provisional ballots, Vickers is the projected winner of the race, Anderson won 32.9 percent of the district’s votes.
There is no Democratic or other party contender for District 28, so Vickers will take the seat uncontested at the General Election, continuing to serve for another four years.
Although the race in Washington County was close – Vickers won by a 5 percent margin – when calculating the whole district, which includes Iron and Beaver counties, Vickers won by a 34 percent margin.
“Elections take a lot of energy, and are emotionally stressful,” Vickers said after the race. “I am grateful for my family, my supporters as well as my friends – most importantly, the constituents I represent. I am grateful for the confidence they have had in me the last two elections, and especially tonight. I am very grateful to them for this chance to continue serving.”
Anderson, who served in the senate seat in 2011 by appointment upon the death of his predecessor Dennis Stowell, failed to retain the seat through General Election in November 2012. And despite his inability to regain it in this year’s election, Anderson has demonstrated no flagging of interest in concern for the nation.
“Lets keep working to get our country back on track!” Anderson said in a Facebook post Tuesday night.
He also extending his own thanks and congratulations, posting to his political Facebook page:
“Thanks to all the support you have given us. It looks like we have come up short. I called and congratulated Senator Vickers on a strong campaign.”
Anderson also called on his supporters to be good stewards and help pick up yard signs, inviting them to bring the signs to him for recycling as appropriate.
