ST. GEORGE — A man and his passenger were both taken to the hospital with injuries that did not appear to be life-threatening Monday morning after a truck ran a stop sign and T-boned their minivan as they were traveling south down the hill on 1000 East near Tabernacle Street.

The van spun 180 degrees and sustained significant damage including damage to the driver’s side rear tire which broke off the axle.

The man driving the truck, a white Mazda pickup, was traveling eastbound on Tabernacle Street and failed to stop at the stop sign, resulting in the collision, St. George Police Officer Jamison Hale said. The driver was issued a citation for failure to yield at a stop sign.

After the incident, the driver of the truck admitted that he was looking at a map on his phone before he came to the stop sign and prior to the crash. Since this was an offense that didn’t occur in a police officer’s presence, and wasn’t necessarily a factor in the crash, the man was not charged with a stronger penalty, St. George Police Public Information Officer Sgt. Sam Despain said.

The two-car accident slowed traffic just after 11 a.m. for a short time on 1000 East, as the minivan, a Mercury Villager, had to be towed from the scene.

This report is based on preliminary information provided by law enforcement or other emergency responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.

Didn’t occur in a police officer’s presence?? So . . . it’s okay for me to text or look at my phone screen while driving so long as there’s no police officer present? Even if I wind up T-boning someone? Weird law!

Well, Ron that’s problem with society… People who think that its ok to break the law as along as they don’t get caught. Really your thoughts are asinine!!! Do you want the police to be able to cite you for texting & driving if they don’t see you? It’s a misdemeanor offense that didn’t happen in the presence of an officer. An officer cannot cite you for a misdemeanor he doesn’t witness, there are some exceptions, but imagine if they could??? Do you want that? Really, wake and smell the coffee!!!
