Heritage Day in Pine Valley: Invitation to picnic, reflect on pioneers of yesteryear

PINE VALLEY – Celebration of the present cannot be done without appreciation of the past, something the Pine Valley community will be doing all day Saturday at their Pine Valley Heritage Day – a gathering to remember how Pine Valley came to be.

Demonstrations will be given throughout the day that will take visitors back to the days of Pine Valley settlers who survived before there were such things as factories and mass production of goods. Quilters will demonstrate quilting, weavers will show their weaving and candlemakers will dip candles all to re-enact how settlers made life livable before anyone conceived of heating and air conditioning.

Starting at 10 a.m. representatives of the forest service will provide pack mule and saw demos to show visitors how early settlers cultivated land without the machinery of modern technology.

Entertainers will alternate every half hour bringing guests of the event a variety of music, storytelling and history anecdotes of the Pine Valley community.

“It’s a time to get out of the heat and enjoy some authentic crafts from times past,” said Ken Sizemore, executive director for the Dixie/Arizona Strip Interpretive Association, said. “It’s just an opportunity to enjoy each other’s company.”

The public is welcome and encouraged to bring their own chairs and blankets for seating. Brandin’ Iron Steakhouse and the Paiute tribe will be offer meals for visitors interested in purchasing food.

Pine Valley Heritage Day is a combined effort of the Pine Valley Ranger District, Dixie National Forest, the Pine Valley community and the Dixie/Arizona Strip Interpretive Association.

I heard a story about a brothel existing in Pine Valley, that it was a popular destination for area religious men. Any truth to that?

I love this information, but next year….could you post this information a little earlier in the week? I t would be helpful to have the time to plan this into the weekend schedule.

We time most preview stories anytime within a week prior, unless there are earlier ticket purchase considerations, J. We also include many that we don’t do separate stories on in our TGIF Weekend Events guide – that publishes on Thursdays. You can always go to our home page and our announcements also – there are pull-down menus for events (under Lifestyle) – and announcements – and we are building our new calendar system. I hope that helps – and yes, this one was on the cusp of the event – sometimes that happens.
