Open letter from Dorothy Engelman, candidate for House District 74

OPINION – Are you tired of the same old rhetoric coming out of Salt Lake City every time the Legislature is in session?

If you answered yes, please keep reading!

Are your concerns being addressed by our current representatives who refer to themselves as the “Sunshine Delegation”?

Did I hear a resounding “No”?

I’m Dorothy Engelman and I want to be the new voice from Southern Utah in the 2015 Legislature by representing the citizens of western Washington County living in House District 74.

My husband, Gary, and I chose to live in this beautiful part of the world and like many of you have lived here less than 15 years. We attend City Council meetings, cultural events, and enjoy being part of this vibrant community. I quickly became active in local organizations such as the Downtown Farmers Market, the Volunteer Center, American Association of University Women, Utah Business Women, Erin Kimball Memorial Foundation, Dixie Tubthumpers Toastmasters Club, the Three Corners Women’s Giving Circle, and Rocky Mountain Hospice. I wrote the “Looking Forward” column in the Spectrum for three years while chair of the Washington County Democratic Party.

It’s important to give back to the community and that’s why I want to represent you in our state Legislature. As a former teacher, I’m proud to be endorsed by the Washington County Education Association.

Soon after deciding to run, I met with mayors, school officials, small business owners, and people just like you to listen to their concerns about the direction southern Utah is going. I asked three questions:

  1. What are the three best things about living here?
  2. What three challenges or opportunities do we face?
  3. What is your reaction to how our current legislature is doing?

As you might imagine, our beautiful scenery, the weather, and friendly people topped the first set of responses. Growth, the Lake Powell pipeline and education were among the next replies. The last question, in regards to our current legislators, rendered these reactions: they don’t listen, they represent special interest groups, and they fail to respond to citizens.

Local elections are about local issues and it’s important for voters to know each candidate’s position on topics of interest. I believe that mine will resonate with many of you.

  • The Lake Powell pipeline is too expensive and not needed. It will benefit the people who own the land and contractors while costing the citizens of Washington County billions of dollars! The State of Utah has already said it won’t pay for it.
  • All citzens of Utah deserve health care; I urge the Legislature to expand Medicaid coverage. You and I have already paid for it through our federal income taxes, why should the money go to other states when we have great need here? Utahns are compassionate and want to help those less fortunate until they’re able to care for themselves.
  • Pay inequity for women is a concern as 61 percent of Utah’s women work outside the home but, on average, earn 70 cents for every $1 a man earns. We are the fourth worst state for pay equity. Women provide for families and all families are important to us.
  • Public schools are the foundation of a community and I support the hard-working people who are educating our children. The Legislature needs to let the professionals do what they do best, without burdening them with more directives and restrictions.
  • Educational funding has suffered in the past 20 years as a result of the Legislature diverting money from education by offering tax loopholes to businesses and limiting revenue through amendments to the state constitution.
  • Additional educational revenue can come from increasing the severance tax on nonrenewable resources such as oil, gas, and coal. A severance tax is paid by companies who profit from these nonrenewables; surrounding states are already using this revenue to fund education. Why aren’t we?

I look forward to listening to your concerns and suggestions for making this special place even better. Call me at 435-879-1558 or email at [email protected]. I will listen.

As veterans, my father and husband, fought to preserve our right to vote; yet too many of us do not take advantage of this privilege.

In Utah, many believe their vote just doesn’t matter. This year, there is a choice and your voice and your vote do matter!

Vote for a new voice from Southern Utah.

Vote for Dorothy Engelman!

Forgive my naivety here, but I have a question for all you Fox news fans: Would Dorothy Engelman be considered a communist or a socialist?

    • willard October 12, 2014 at 8:04 pm

I believe we call that, like you, a useful idiot.

    • Not a Fan of Engleman October 12, 2014 at 8:05 pm

Probably. But mostly a “SELFIST!” She wants what is best for Dorothy Engelman.
Remember, this person is all about gun control. She screwed up a high school raffle, and then went on to screw up a business that had a lot of potential. Both because she is a hater of firearms. So her husband and her dad were in the military? So what, that doesn’t mean she has done anything for this country, or anyone but herself.
Keep in mind that everything she says, every things she “stands for,” is subject to change.

      • From the outside looking in October 14, 2014 at 9:12 pm

The raffle – so the team didn’t get to go to the playoffs after the raffle was deemed “illegal” by state statue?
2 teens committed suicide within months of the raffle. Having a gun raffle to benefit teens doesn’t reflect poor judgment?
What business? The word potential is very subjective – please quantify.
So what has changed in her position? The gun raffle was illegal and used poor judgment.
What business was “screwed”? If business is closed, her powers are amazing considering the several negative comments noted here.
Her father and husband in the military are their accomplishments which she is acknowledging. Read more of the article for HER accomplishments.
She stood up to people like you for what she “stands for” and hasn’t backed down. So what’s subject to change?

    • Bender October 12, 2014 at 8:19 pm

You aim too low BOBBER. Fox News would deem her a terrorist in bed with the Taliban.

    • D & D October 12, 2014 at 9:08 pm

She would be considered a BOBBER.

  • Big Guy October 12, 2014 at 8:14 pm

Standard liberal rhetoric. Ms. Engelman would fit well as one of Nancy Pelosi’s lap dogs in Congress but her ideas don’t resonate with Southern Utah. Is she pro-abortion? Doesn’t say but probably yes. Does she favor same sex marriage? Doesn’t say but probably yes. Expanding Medicare will cost Utah taxpayers billions when the Feds stop subsidizing in a few years: is that what we want? Raising teachers’ pay has not improved educational results anywhere in the country that it has been tried. Will it improve Utah’s schools? No, but it will ensure that teachers vote for Democrats. Ms. Engelman by her own admission is a “tax and spend” Democrat with a liberal social agenda, clearly out of step with Utah voters.

    • Bender October 12, 2014 at 9:23 pm

      Standard Fox News rhetoric:
      .
      1) “Is she pro-abortion?” Yeah, that’s at the top of everyone’s list of pressing matters for congressional action. The courts have decided.
      .
      2) “Does she favor same sex marriage?” You living in a cave BIG GUY? This matter is decided. Let’s talk about real issues, not made up dramas.
      .
      3) “Expanding Medicare will cost Utah taxpayers billions when the Feds stop subsidizing in a few years.” Says you and your knuckle dragging right wing buddies.
      .
      4) “Raising teachers’ pay” Now we’re talking about something that actually matters to our future. Are you proud of being below Mississippi in per pupil spending. I’m guessing you actually may be proud of this. The rest of us are embarrassed.
      .
Where a Democratic candidate has the potential to make a big, positive, difference for you BIG GUY, is putting the brakes on the Lake Powell Pipeline. You won’t see an ounce of opposition from the local Republicans on this matter. These local Republicans are playing you for a sucker BIG GUY. They talk free markets but when it comes to local water, it’s socialism the whole day long. They know you are too closed minded to vote anything but the big R. You’ll get the pipeline and its ruinous costs and wonder what happened. You heard it from Bender first.

      • Dana October 13, 2014 at 5:42 am

Bender, most of the R voters here will not wonder what happened because they are too ignorant to educate themselves. Remember, they are the product of the failing Utah educational system.

    • Randy Thomson October 13, 2014 at 1:14 am

Um “BIG GUY” you are aware that Dorothy isn’t running for the United States House of Representatives, correct? I mean it sounds to me as if you do, could be my mistake but last time I checked Nancy Pelosi has absolutely NOTHING to do with the UTAH House of Representatives.

Also I I just want to advise you that Marriage Equality is here to STAY; courtesy of the 10th District Circuit Court, the US Supreme Court, and the US Constitution.

It’s unfortunate that you only use idealogical rhetoric to blast those you might have a disagreement with. You should try reasoned discourse sometime, you might supreme yourself and actually learn something!!

      • Big Guy October 13, 2014 at 10:45 am

I pointed out Engelman’s similarities to Nancy Pelosi only to make my point: her politics match Pelosi’s, not Utah’s. Ditto Engelman’s views on gay marriage and abortion: these are not values held by the majority of Utah’s voters, despite their imposition on the country by Federal courts. A vote for Engelman is a vote for the same liberal thinking that is likely to be repudiated by next month’s Congressional elections. Randy and Bender appear to be frustrated liberals in a sea of social and fiscal conservatism. Must be lonely.

        • Bender October 13, 2014 at 10:57 am

Bender is a happy independent amazed, and entertained, by the silliness of the extreme right, i.e. BIG GUY.

    • Chris October 13, 2014 at 10:51 am

Big Guy is obviously not Big Brain. No one is expanding Medicare. It is Medicaid that is expanding. Do you have any idea of what the difference is? I didn’t think so.

    • Jj October 14, 2014 at 12:22 pm

Abortion and gay marriage have nothing to do with the office she is running for. I think you use politics as a sort of second religion so you can lazily identify Good guys and bad guys instead of actually considering good policy for our society.

  • ladybugavenger October 12, 2014 at 8:31 pm

    Socialist

  • Ron October 12, 2014 at 10:14 pm

Labels are an easy substitute for thought. You want a representative who will vote to waste your money on futile lawsuits over issues that have already been decided? Or a representative who will do things that actually make our lives better–like opposing the pipeline and working to improve our schools? I probably know the answer. You don’t really care so long as he or she runs under the right label.

We need to get a healthcare plan like what Vermont is instituting and kick the greedy insurance companies to the curb.

  • Forget Facts October 12, 2014 at 11:23 pm

Why would you want a “new” voice in Southern Utah. Is this the same “change” that Obama ran on? There is nothing new about liberal/Democrat rhetoric. Does anyone know where Utah ranked for unemployment, median income, etc.? There’s a reason Utah has consistently ranked in the top 10 of many various reports and I would put money on it that it’s because they haven’t followed many of the other states old failed liberal agenda.

I have very little doubt that this “person” (though I haven’t dug into her, just from reading this she is likely a typical extremely horrible, greedy liberal). You don’t bite the hand that feeds you and if you notice, where has she added value to society? She hasn’t. The majority of the self-righteous “teachers” are nothing more than stooge government employees. The fact is that other countries spend much less than America on “education” and have much better results. Last I looked, America isn’t even in the top 20. Oh you want more proof here? Look at California, it is in the top 5 for per pupil spending, yet ranks on the bottom 5 for results.

Oh and of course liberal great “contribution” as they believe is that they take up “causes.” One of the most obvious is look how many groups she’s “involved” in that are actually sexist and have “woman” in the title. Why would you listen to someone like this instead of I dunno a Meg Whitman who actually made in private industry. Further why don’t you have this liberal release her education transcripts and prove that she wasn’t the bottom 1/3 of her class as a newish study has proven to be typical of “educators” (to which I would bet is especially true of liberal). Also, don’t get this twisted as to infer that I think all educators are bad as I know without a doubt what great teachers I had through high school.

    • Bobber October 13, 2014 at 12:46 am

I can see why ur name is “forget facts” obviously u forgot them…

    • Ron October 13, 2014 at 7:45 am

Yeah, well, let’s keep teachers at the bottom of the salary scale, and maybe THEN we’ll attract really bright people instead of the bottom third of the class. Talented, bright people want to be paid well. Yes, some people are willing to give up the prospect of earning a good living in order to serve and hopefully change lives . . . but not many. And I’ll bet you weren’t one of them, were you?

    • Better thinker October 13, 2014 at 8:12 pm

      I agree ,
1 ..Southern Utah is at only 60 % of its normal water level for this time of year. Recent science says with global warming drought will get worse before it gets better . To take the lake Powell pipeline of the table is stupid.
2 ..Obama care is a exspansion of Medicaid.
3 ..pay equality dos not take into account that many women are working at more part time jobs than men and it does not take into account that women are more likely to work at lower paying jobs like secretary while men are working construction that is a much more pay with the same education level.
4..The part about eduction system was vague , and did not say what directives are restrictions she was referring to. This should be a red flag for any voter.
5..I own a business and I got a tax break when I started my new business in southern Utah. Business owners take big risks. Without the tax break I may have started my business in another state Like Texas that is more business friendly . And I gave 42 people jobs And they pay taxes and I pay taxes. I allso I payed taxes on overt 2 million dollars in raw materials I bought to produce my product. My buying raw materials allso produced jobs for somebody somewhere .
Dorothy you don’t know what your talking about, think jobs before you think taxes.
6.. What in the H is severance tax on nonrenewable energy.

      • From the outside looking in October 14, 2014 at 8:46 pm

Your arguments would hold more weight if grammar, punctuation, capitalization was correctly used. Will more low paying jobs keep someone out of poverty? Too many black and white answers to very complex issues.

  • Randy Thomson October 13, 2014 at 1:04 am

Does anyone ever comment using their ACTUAL REAL names??

It seems to me most here just spout off Faux News’ liberal hate rhetoric. Does anyone here know how to have a civil conversation with dialog and reasoned thought??? Perhaps your hate rhetoric gets you points in your little half minded social network, but it does absolutely nothing for us here in the real world.

I wonder if that’s why you all prefer pseudonyms… Do real world facts scare you?

Dorothy Engelman, a fresh new perspective for HD 74!

    • Better thinker October 13, 2014 at 11:50 pm

      CAN WE AFFORD DOROTHY ?
When nonrenewable energy company’s are taxed the increased cost is passed on to consumers.
Tax on nonrenewable energy company’s is collected in different whys depending on the state. Utah energy producers are taxed through property tax , income tax , cooperate tax and severance tax almost equally . While other states my tax mostly by severance tax . So it may appear that other states use more in nonrenewable energy severance tax to pay for education it’s because they collect more tax under that name.
You might be interested to know that under severance tax many states tax nonrenewable energy company’s wells rather they are producing are not.
Here is a list of other whys other states collect more taxes for schools: lotteries , gambling , pornography (CA), cannabis (CO) , prostitution (NV). These taxes are payed for by people with vises ,does that appeal to you Dorothy?

      • From the outside looking in October 14, 2014 at 8:48 pm

Utah would have plenty of funding if online pornography produced tax money. I believe you have a “eureka” thought.

  • beacon October 13, 2014 at 7:11 am

Dorothy Engelman questioned the gun raffle because, generally, raffles are illegal in Utah. Check the law. As for liberals taking up causes? I’d be careful with that one. Conservatives have their fair share of causes they espouse, too: stop abortion, stop gay rights, stop gun control, stop voting rights, stop immigration reform, the list goes on. What’s needed is a reasonable discussion of issues and that’s not what’s being heard. At least by trying Dorothy in the Utah House, there’s a chance for something new. Otherwise, it will be more of the same old. As for what’s Snow done for southern Utah, look at the wages here for the average working stiff. We’re one of the fastest growing counties, but it hasn’t improved wages for our families. Legislators use “our children and grandchildren” as excuses for just about everything (public lands, Lake Powell Pipeline, etc.) but their actions don’t bear out that mantra. They don’t even tax the coal industry to fund our schools now. Why would we want more public lands so those who take that resource can pay nothing to get it. This state may be “business friendly” as they like to tout, but it often doesn’t appear “family friendly” in all that rhetoric.

  • A_Poulos October 13, 2014 at 7:33 am

I am part of this “Southern Utah” you and all the other Republicans speak of… This ridiculous ideology you assume we all share only further validates your ignorance and intolerance. Women’s right to make her own personal CHOICE on abortion was settled in the court and should be left alone! Same sex marriage has been settled in court and should be left alone! Education in the state of Utah is an absolute disgrace, just take a look at our states standings in ALL academic subject testings.

I am a registered Democrat who has never once voted by party alone! Unfortunately, like stated above, the majority of the Republicans in this state are obsessed with the R next to the candidates name… What ever would we do if all the R’s and D’s were GONE and people had to actually turn off Fox News and educate themselves…. I’m guessing we would have a lot more Republicans voting Democrat!!!!

    • D & D October 13, 2014 at 10:22 am

Yea educate them, round them up and make them set and watch MSNBC and tapes of Harry Reid

  • anti-liberal October 13, 2014 at 10:53 am

Go ahead and vote for this woman. Look what has happened in neighboring state Colorado. In the last 15-20 years Colorado has seen an unparalled influx of migrating Californian. And look what Colorado has now: legal recreational marijuana, stricter gun control (losing firearm related business’s…jobs), etc. Just vote for this “carpet bagger” from another state and soon Utah will be just like California, New York, Detroit, MI, and all the other states run by liberal Democrats. The best that could happen is if these liberals don’t like the way things are here….go back to where you came from, and try your politics there. Utah doesn’t want you or your king here. Engleman the “carpet bagger”….stick a fork in her, she is so DONE!!!

    • Bender October 13, 2014 at 11:27 am

Whoa, the AM radio learned hate is strong in this one.

    • Dana October 13, 2014 at 12:32 pm

You are going to give yourself a stroke. BTW, Orrin Hatch isn’t originally from Utah. Would he also be considered a “‘carpet bagger?” Chaffetz was born in California. Is he a “carpet bagger?”
Continue to vote along party lines since it’s working so well for our state. It’s produced two corrupt A.G’s, an incompetent current A.G. as well as a Governor who used MILLION$ of tax payers dollars to call in outside help to fight and LOSE the many appeals to SSM, Lest we forget, Kevin Garn and his hot tub incident and the hush money he paid. Change is looking better and better.

  • Dr. p October 13, 2014 at 11:00 am

She is not going to win so I don’t think any other common is needed.

    • Bender October 13, 2014 at 11:29 am

You’re right, she won’t win; but that’s no reason to let our spelling and grammar sink to hillbilly levels dear nameless poster.

  • Utahn October 13, 2014 at 11:34 am

Living in Washington County, we moved there because we liked the life-style and culture. Too many from away, decide they need to change the culture, because it is different from where they came. We have seen what happens when the candidate pitches hope and change, lean forward (looking forward?), and change we can believe in. Beware. I’ve had enough change for one lifetime.

  • steamer October 13, 2014 at 11:38 am

In reading the above comments about Dorothy Engelman’s candidacy for House District 74, I see a lot of mindless terror at the thought that a strong and educated woman should be able to put her name on the line for a seat of authority in Utah. This state has a lot to be ashamed of; two inept senators, corrupt Attorneys General, archaic views on guns, gays, liquor and the costly but futile attempt to take control of public lands that Utah never had in the first place. After you vote for the letter “R” in the next election, without knowing who and what you voted for, you can rest easy, knowing that you took a brave stand to keep Southern Utah in the dark ages.

    • Bender in the Blender October 13, 2014 at 12:50 pm

It must really $uck to be in the minority political party here; I say “Embrace the $uck!!”.

  • beacon October 13, 2014 at 1:59 pm

It is too bad that so many support excessive growth in Washington County, while few see the benefit of that in their own lives but continue to support those who provide so little opportunity for them and their children. It seems many will let national political issues that are so divisive direct their vote rather than thinking “locally” about what might actually benefit their lives and those they love. There sure seems to be a lot of angst in many of these comments. Perhaps you need a change, too?

  • Duks October 13, 2014 at 2:42 pm

Yeah I’d vote for a Liberal on the 3rd of NEVER!

    • Bender October 13, 2014 at 6:00 pm

  • Bobber October 13, 2014 at 3:32 pm

I, for one, am not going to vote for someone who isn’t worthy. So does Dorothy Engelman have a temple recommend or not? If not, she needs to meet with her bishop asap!

  • Thinker October 13, 2014 at 3:55 pm

I live is Southern Utah. I am tired of the same old same old. I do not feel the male politicians listen to female concerns. I am sickened by the above distorted comments. You obviously do not know a thing about Dorothy. She listens and I think she will add a great deal of perspective. I am tired of old ideas. We need a little diversity for a better discussion. St George is all about White Men controlling everything for their own advantage. They go to meetings with their mind already made up. I want someone to represent ME for a change.

For those who feel local leaders don’t listen to women, heck, they don’t really listen to anyone who doesn’t hold the same opinions they do. Woman may be dismissed more quickly, but all citizens who aren’t of their persuasion are dismissed. The leadership wants growth, but when growth brings dissenting opinions – and it will be bringing more, of that they can be sure – they don’t want it. They want the newcomers to pay up and shut up. Conservatives who don’t want taxes at the federal level have apparently not been paying attention to what’s happened locally with taxes over the past 10-12 years – even with the recession. Where will they go now that the recession is “essentially” over and the growth machine is gaining full steam again. Who will benefit? Will it be Joe the plumber or Jill the secretary? Will their children really benefit with the Lake Powell Pipeline or will it just leave the children and grandchildren with an overgrown, traffic-clogged city where conservation will “finally” need to be enforced because too many people count on a questionable source but their parents and grandparents weren’t willing to make the right choices earlier in the century?

  • Dorothy October 14, 2014 at 8:26 am

A big Thank You to those who have commented thoughtfully and politely to my positions.

I will be at at Perks! Espresso & Smoothies, 1515 W. Sunset Blvd. Saint George on Tuesday, October 21, 2014, at 6:00 p.m. to meet with interested voters in my district.
