16-year-old boy in coma after ATV crash during Sadie Hawkins date

ST. GEORGE – A 16-year-old boy who was taken by Life Flight to Dixie Regional Medical Center Saturday afternoon following an ATV accident in Pine Valley is currently in a coma at DRMC as of 10 p.m. Saturday night.

“It’s just touch and go right now,” Denise Webster, a friend and neighbor of the boy’s family, said.

The boy, who is a football player at Snow Canyon High School, was on a Sadie Hawkins day date in Pine Valley when he and his date crashed while riding in a Polaris RZR side-by-side on Grass Valley Road, approximately 2 miles north of Pine Valley Highway.

The boy and his 15-year-old date, also a Snow Canyon student, were with a group of teens on a Sadie’s activity. The boy and his date were riding in the RZR when rain and hail began to fall, Webster said. Another family friend, who asked not to be named, said he believes they were trying to hurry back to their vehicle to get out of the storm when the RZR hit a large puddle and they hydroplaned.

“They hit water and hydroplaned and it rolled the (ATV),” Webster said.

After the accident occurred, Webster said, the boy’s date kept a very cool head in responding to the situation until help arrived.

She gets an A-plus because she was very calm and kept him responsive,” Webster said.

Emergency responders reached the remote area where the teens had crashed within about 20-30 minutes, Webster said. Life Flight, the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, Enterprise Ambulance and Pine Valley Fire Department each responded, according to information from the Washington County Sheriff’s Office.

Life Flight airlifted the boy to Dixie Regional Medical Center in critical condition. The girl was taken to DRMC by ambulance.

The 15-year-old girl has bumps and bruises and had to receive some stitches, Webster said, but it appears she is otherwise going to be OK.

The boy suffered head trauma as a result of the accident. He underwent surgery Saturday, and doctors are now monitoring him for responsiveness.

“It could be a long period of time, a short period of time,” Webster said. “Basically the doctor told us … we just wait and watch for movement.”

The boy’s family has received overwhelming support since the accident happened, she said. There were 50 or more well-wishers at the hospital at one time, including some of the boy’s friends and members of the Snow Canyon High School football team.

“There were a lot of people up there,” Webster said. “We literally took up all of the waiting room.”

Friends, relatives and members of the family’s LDS church congregation have organized a large prayer effort to take place for the boy on Sunday, Webster said.

“Really, the only thing that we can do now is just to pray and fast and hope for a miracle,” she said.

“I know they’re grateful for the support and appreciative and grateful for the prayers,” she added.

This report will be updated as more information becomes available.

    Prayers going up…that poor kid.

I love how the media of StG is still so bias and leaves out info unless it pertains to an agenda.
Why are kids driving unsupervised still after all these years. I’m also going to guess there was no helmet on his head… and anyone who knows StG the likely scenario is that they were trying to mud the RZR and lost control. Don’t sugar coat your stories with unsubstantiated anonymous supposition. It makes writers look stupid.

All of the details of the accident will come out. For now, with a boy in the hospital hanging on for his life, have a sliver of decency and respect. Put yourself in the shoes of the family at this very fragile time.

Bigchef is a big idiot. This is a good kid that got hurt. It’s not looking good. You’re a moron to say the least. You have no idea what happened and need to keep your stupid comments to yourself.

WHY IS HE A GOOD KID BECAUS HE IS LDS. LOL. OR A FOOTBALL PLAYER? THEY ARE IRRESPONSIBLE NORMAL KIDS, NOTHING MORE, AND STUFF JUST HAPPENS.. HOPE THE FAMILY HAS GOOD INSURANCE…EVERYONE KNOWS THE RISKS OF ATVS…IF YOU ARE NOT WILLING TO DEAL WITH THE CONSEQUENCES DON’T BUY THEM FOR YOUR KIDS TO USE. Instead of criticism why don’t you get a heart and sympathize. Don’t you think his family and friends are kicking themselves and rethinking that day enough. They need good vibes. They stay in a waiting room day and night waiting for news on their son/brother/friend. The writer says what they are told. They work with the information they get. Stop being harsh.
I have been in the same waiting room with these people for two days now for my own family situation. This guy has a huge support system and I hear from discussions that he is doing better. Like everyone else they need to take one day at a time. My heart and prayers are with them

I AGREE ACCIDENTS HAPPEN EVERYDAY YET THIS ONE IS SOMEHOW SPECIAL DUE TO WHAT HIGH SCHOOL STAUS/age of kids or …RELIGIOUS AFFILIATION? UNLIKE SMALL TOWN PAPERS IN OTHER STATES THIS ONE ALWAYS HAS COMMENTS REGARDING RELIGION.
EVERYONE CAN READ THE STICKERS THAT STATE NO ONE UNDER 16 SHOULD BE DRIVING…..HELMETS USED AT ALL TIMES..NOT SAFE ETC.
JUST LIKE BOOZE & CIGARETTES WOULD YOU BUY THESE FOR YOUR 15 YEAR OLD KIDS? TEENAGERS ARE NOT CAPABLE OF MAKING GOOD CHOICES.

  • anonymous November 2, 2014 at 5:20 pm

Why, oh why, would a reputable news outlet allow comments from the public to appear under a any news article? You truly appear to be an idiot, LITTLE SQUAW.

    • Cali rocks November 3, 2014 at 5:36 pm

LITTLE SQUAW IF YOU DO NOT LIKE THE COMMENTS WHY ARE YOU INVOLVED IN DOING THE SAME THING. THIS IS 2014 IT IS WHAT PEOPLE DO…

  • CDC November 2, 2014 at 7:27 pm

As an EMT on scene this was a bad accident that at this time does not need evaluation and what ifs but prayer.

    • Just Me.... November 3, 2014 at 8:25 am

As an EMT on the scene, you should respect confidentiality and have no comment. Ridiculous…..

      • CDC November 3, 2014 at 10:08 am

JUST ME – Help me out here!. What confidentiality was breached? No name mentioned, no condition mentioned – maybe I should not have used the word “bad”. I find it frustrating to have people making negative commits about a situation or an article with no knowledge. Which is why I made a what I thought was a minor commit. Mainly asking for prayer for those in need.

I am so sorry for this young boy and his family. My 15 year old grandson was killed in a tragic accident three years ago at Lake Powell, and yes, it was an accident. Please, people, be kind and considerate. This family needs your love, support, and prayers – not your condemnation!

  • PROTECT THE SHEEP November 2, 2014 at 9:02 pm

  • ScanMeister November 3, 2014 at 10:59 am

Prayers to all the family and a full recovery outcome for this young man.

  • Koolaid November 4, 2014 at 9:12 am

$20K for a RZR but no insurance?

  • annoyed November 7, 2014 at 7:27 am

Back when I was in HS, there was a similar accident, but the kid ended up paralyzed. Because of an ATV accident.
