Water Conservancy District schedules garden workshops for the public

ST. GEORGE — The Washington County Water Conservancy District has announced its 2015 landscape workshop schedule, with the next workshop on irrigation set for Saturday at 10 a.m. in the Tonaquint Nature Center, 1851 South Dixie Drive in St. George.

All classes are free and open to the public.

“The workshops provide an opportunity for local residents and guests to learn a wide variety of landscaping and gardening principals specific to our desert climate,” said Julie Gillins, conservation manager for Washington County Water Conservancy District. “Industry professionals will share tips on design, management and installation in a casual, hands-on environment. Experienced and aspiring gardeners and landscapers are welcome.”

The 2015 class line-up is as follows:

  • Jan. 24 | Irrigation | Understand the mechanics and improve the efficiencies of your system. Information on spray, drip, pressure reducing (or relief) valves, and new technology will be covered
  • Jan. 31 | Drip Systems | Learn how to install, use and maintain a drip system
  • Feb. 7, 21 | Veggie Gardening | Receive tips on planting and growing vegetables in this climate
  • March 7 | Raised Beds and Gardening | Learn best practices for building and gardening in raised planting beds
  • March 21 | River Friendly Landscapes and Rainwater Harvesting | Discuss water-wise landscape practices and tips for harvesting rainwater
  • Apr. 11 | Water-efficient Landscape Design | Learn the design basics to create a water-efficient, lush landscape
  • Apr. 25 | Trees and Shrubs | Instruction will be given on how to prune and properly care for your trees and shrubs
  • May 9 | Herbs | Everything you wanted to know about herbs: selecting, growing, culinary use and preserving
  • May 30 | Water-efficient Lawn Care | Learn the best management practices for a water-efficient lawn
  • June 13 | Cactus & Succulents | Learn how to select and nurture cactus and succulents
  • June 27 | Edible Landscapes | Know how to design and care for an edible landscape
  • July 11 | Pest Management | Discuss common pests and effective pesticide options
  • July 18 | Container Planting | Add color, dimension and visual appeal to your landscape with container planting; tips on caring for potted plants, including minimizing water use, will be shared
  • Aug. 8, 22 | Veggie Gardening | Learn how to make Southern Utah’s long growing season work to your advantage when planting and harvesting vegetables
  • Sept. 12 | Cooking with Homegrown Produce | Discuss how to cook and use produce from your garden
  • Sept. 26 | Planting and Planning | Create color and creativity in your landscape, even during the cold winter months
  • Nov. 7 | Bulbs | Discover how to plant, care for and design bulbs in your landscape

Washington County Water Conservancy District, a not-for-profit public agency, was established in 1962 to manage Southern Utah’s regional water needs. The district oversees the development, stabilization, management, acquisition and conservation of water resources in Washington County in an ongoing effort to provide a safe, sustainable water supply for current and future generations.
