SALT LAKE CITY – Former GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney may not be throwing his hat back into the presidential ring next year, but the 68-year-old former Massachusetts governor is reportedly getting ready to throw his hat into the boxing ring with none other than former heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield.
The Salt Lake Tribune reported Monday that on May 15, Romney and Holyfield will go toe-to-toe in a charity match at the Rail Event Center in Salt Lake City. The event will benefit international humanitarian organization Charity Vision.
“We just thought it would be a lot better to provide this kind of entertainment rather than just have dinner and listen to speakers,” Romney told the Salt Lake Tribune.
In addition to the headlining bout between Romney and Holyfield, which Romney said will consist of the former champ and him suiting up and sparring around, the event will also feature matches between currently active professional prizefighters.
The event will be a black-tie affair aimed at attracting corporate sponsorships. The price tag will run between $25,000 and $250,000, depending on the sponsorship level, the Tribune reported.
In an interview with Fox Business on Feb. 13, Holyfield talked about his upcoming match with the former presidential nominee. When asked if he would actually hit Romney during the match, Holyfield said, “We’ll see.”
“I just want him to stop hiding, you know,” Holyfield joked, “’cause he’s gonna get the whippin’.”
