HURRICANE – Westbound traffic out of Hurricane on state Route 9 was slowed for nearly an hour Friday as vehicles were diverted around a four-vehicle collision.

Around 4:20 p.m., a 30-year-old man driving a 1996 Honda Civic was westbound on State Street/SR-9 and was quickly approaching the intersection at N. 2260 West. The light at the intersection had just turned green and the driver of the Honda came up on traffic too fast, Hurricane Police City Officer Jeff Adams said.

“The driver wasn’t able to stop in time and split the lane in between two vehicles,” Adams said.

The attempt to move in between the cars ahead resulted in the Honda hitting a 2001 Saturn passenger car driven by a 30-year-old woman, and a 2015 Ford passenger van carrying seven people. The Honda continued to move forward and also hit a 2003 Toyota Tacoma truck driven by a 50-year-old man.

The incident left all of the vehicles inoperable and in the roadway, blocking the westbound traffic lanes for over 45 minutes until the roadway was cleared, Adams said.

Traffic was diverted through the center-turning lane until the vehicles were removed.

Paramedics assessed possible injuries, though those involved declined transport to the hospital by ambulance.

The driver of the Honda Civic was cited for improper lane travel and following too close, Adams said.

Hurricane City Police and Hurricane Valley Fire and Ambulance responded to the incident.

This report is based on preliminary information provided by law enforcement or other emergency responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.
