HURRICANE — The wide-open desert just outside of Hurricane is about to get muddy as the Hurricane Mud Run prepares to challenge competitors of all ages, the clock and their pride as they race an approximately 3-mile course complete with mud, rope swings, pole runs and even more mud.
Held with the support of the Army National Guard, the military-style obstacle course will take place next Saturday, May 16, with the first wave of competitors crawling, jumping, running and swinging their way through the course starting at 8 a.m.
This year marks the third year for the mud run and race director Chris Mathisen said it is only getting better.
“This year is going to be bigger,” Mathisen said. “We have added six new obstacles.”
Mathisen described the course as natural obstacles that have been enhanced by mud … lots of mud. Participants do not have to complete every obstacle, he said, but if they do, they will be covered in mud.
“We have got what we feel is the best mudhole in the known universe,” Mathisen said. “It is an outstanding mudhole.”
Throughout the day, participants will be supported by National Guardsmen, who will be manning everything from parking to obstacles along the course.
Guardsmen will also run the first heat followed by police, fire and emergency services personnel, Mathisen said.
The rest of the waves are open for individuals, families and teams who can join an elite competition or just run it for fun. There will also be a free kiddie mudder, Mathisen said, which is a mini mud race just for the little ones who want to participate.

Registration is open online and is $65 for an individual. Your race entry fee includes a shirt, the opportunity to win prizes from the race’s sponsors and free, downloadable photos to commemorate your experience.
There are special discounts for police, fire and emergency responders who wish to participate, as well as discounts for signing up as a team.
