ST. GEORGE — Two vehicles were severely damaged in an accident at the intersection of Main Street and 300 South in St. George Sunday afternoon, and three individuals ended up going to the hospital following the collision.

Just after noon, a Dodge Ram pickup was traveling west on 300 South. The truck failed to yield to oncoming traffic at a stop sign, St. George Police Sgt. Spencer Holmes said, and was struck violently in the intersection by an Oldsmobile sedan that was traveling southbound on Main Street.

The collision tore the rear wheel and brake rotor off the Dodge, there was major front-end damage to the Oldsmobile, and both airbags in the Oldsmobile were deployed.

All passengers in the Dodge were wearing seat belts, and two children in the truck were in child seats. No injuries to the Dodge passengers were reported, Holmes said, although the parents were going to take the children to the hospital to be checked out.

“An impact significant enough to rip a rotor and bust a wheel on a full size Dodge pickup,” Holmes said, “an impact that significant could have caused some damage to those kids, but luckily they were in their child seats.”

The 93-year-old driver of the Oldsmobile was wearing her seat belt and was initially reported as unhurt, but she later complained of chest and arm pain. Paramedics were called to the scene and checked her out, but Holmes said she refused transport to the hospital, preferring to have her family take her.

A large bulge was apparent on the passenger side windshield of the Oldsmobile. Holmes confirmed there were no passengers in the car and said the airbag probably caused the windshield damage.

The driver of the Dodge pickup was cited for failure to yield to oncoming traffic.

This report is based on preliminary information provided by law enforcement or other emergency responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.
