ST. GEORGE —Teaching science, technology, engineering and math in new and fun ways, “eSMART Summer Camp for Girls” is back at Dixie State University for the fifth year in a row, starting the first session July 7.
Open to girls who will be entering seventh, eighth and ninth grades, the overnight camp will be offered for two sessions this summer.
The first camp will run July 7-10 and the second session July 14-17. In addition to learning about the STEM disciplines, campers are introduced to college life as they stay in Dixie State University’s residential housing during the four-day experience.
“What an amazing experience for my daughter,” Kat Garrard, whose daughter has attended eSMART camp in the past, said. “She will always remember attending this camp and all that she learned there. Thank you so much for taking such good care of her and inspiring her for the future.”
During the four days of camp, girls will discover different disciplines of science through a variety of hands-on activities. They will build asteroids, isolate their DNA, work with Bureau of Land Management archaeologists and make ice cream while learning about chemistry. Additionally, they will travel to Zion National Park, where they will learn about water quality and help with park research. Back on campus, campers will learn about diving physiology at the DSU pool.
While at the camp, girls will also speak with potential role models, both students and professionals, who will provide advice and inspiration to campers who are considering careers in STEM.
DSU biology professor Erin O’Brien and computer and information technology professor Rachel Ramsey run the camp and will stay with the girls throughout the entire experience. Additionally, female science majors at DSU, who have been through background checks, will serve as camp counselors and stay in the student housing facilities with campers. Campers receive personalized attention, as registration is limited to 40 girls for each session.
The camp is sponsored by Dixie State University and the St. George branch of the American Association of University Women. Fundraising efforts subsidize the fees for the camp, and as a result, registration is only $150 for the entire experience.
