Hatch determined to help patients facing negative consequences of Obamacare

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senate Finance Committee Chairman Orrin Hatch Thursday issued the following statement regarding the Supreme Court’s ruling on King v. Burwell:

Today’s ruling failed to hold the Obama Administration responsible for its reckless execution of its own poorly-crafted law. The plain text of Obamacare authorizes subsidies only through state exchanges, not the federal exchange. This decision allows the Obama Administration simply to ignore the law and to implement its own preferred policy instead.

Obamacare has been a series of broken promises from the start. From skyrocketing costs to less access to care and more bureaucratic control of the healthcare system, the President’s law has failed patients and taxpayers.  And, unfortunately, absent a cooperative President, the negative consequences of Obamacare will continue.  The American people deserve better.

Fortunately, Republicans have a plan to reverse this course by repealing and replacing Obamacare with reforms that put patients – not Washington – first.  Moving forward, we will continue to seek input on our legislative proposal – the Patient Care Act – and use every opportunity available to give both states and patients more freedom and flexibility. We will continue to work toward real reform that lowers costs and helps Americans access high quality healthcare. By putting patients first, we will end the negative consequences of Obamacare and implement policy that is good medicine for American families.

Hatch is the coauthor of the Patient CARE Act, a legislative plan that repeals Obamacare and replaces it with common-sense, patient-focused reforms that reduce healthcare costs and increase access to affordable, high-quality care, with House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Fred Upton and Sen. Richard Burr.

Hatch is the former Chairman and current member of the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) and Judiciary Committees.

Ok, so I clicked on the link for the Republican plan, their Patient CARE Act. It was the same nebulous words we’ve all seen from them before – tort reform, buying insurance across state lines, providing patients with “tools” to assist them in their health care decisions. The “tools” were unspecified.

The Supreme Court decided 6-3 in favor of the Affordable Care Act. Republicans should now help fix the flaws and shut up about “repeal and replace”. Let’s move on, finally.

obamacare and “Benghazi” is all they’ve had to whine about the past 7 years. Oh, and Hilary’s emails…

  • BIG GUY June 25, 2015 at 1:17 pm

KARENS, it’s Democrats and ACA supporters who should “shut up.” As of June 2015, opinion polls show 42 percent of the public reporting an unfavorable view of Obamacare and 39 percent reporting a favorable view. There has never been a majority of Americans who favored the law.
    .
Call it “fix the flaws” or “repeal and replace,” but a vast majority of Americans, including you from your statements above, want substantial changes in the law. Start with, “If you like your current health insurance, you can keep it.”

    • fun bag June 25, 2015 at 1:47 pm

The amount of money and time the Repubs have spent whining and crying about ACA you’d think they could have spent that effort and money fixing it to something near perfection, but then what would they have to whine about??? I guess there’s always Benghazi and Hilary’s yahoo email account…

But once again, you can’t talk sense into folks that have hard-right-wing kook radio pumped into their ears for hours every single day…

    • laytonian June 25, 2015 at 2:45 pm

@BIG GUY — telling people to “shut up” is all you’ve got?

      How some some TRUTH?
IF you ask people a question in a certain way, you can twist the results.
So…when people are asked if they like “Obamacare”, 42% (people of your ilk) will say “NO”.

BUT when those people are asked specific questions about the ACA (children insured to age 26, expanded coverage of diagnostics, ability to get health insurance despite pre-existing condition, etc, etc)….guess what! The VAST majority of people are positive.

I’m glad YOU will never want to enroll in Medicare, VA, TriCare, Government healthcare or any other “socialist” program. Thank you for being personally responsible and able to afford ANY healthcare you may ever need without being part of an insurance pool.

      • BIG GUY June 25, 2015 at 5:23 pm

LAYTONIAN, “shut up” was KARENS’ phrase which is why I put it in quotes.
        .
As for cherry picking ideas that sound good to people and then using them to tout Obamacare, how about “From each according to his ability, to each according to his need.” Sounds good. In fact, it sounded good to Karl Marx who popularized it.
        .
Over 75% of those enrolled in Obamacare, Republicans and Democrats, are receiving subsidies. Of course they like their plans; you would too if someone else were paying for it. As you say, “If you ask people a question in a certain way, you can twist the results.”

    • KarenS June 25, 2015 at 4:46 pm

Please don’t read your own thoughts into my words. I never said we needed “substantial changes”. And while we are on the subject of “if you like your current health insurance you can keep it”, that statement applied to the junk insurance policies like my post college students had to purchase after they got dropped from our health insurance (before Obamacare required employers to keep them on until age 26 – yay, Obamacare).

Anyway, the only insurance they could obtain post college and before employment was the junk insurance that you prayed they would never have to use. Nothing else was available. They are the healthy ones that now are paying their fair share a la Romneycare. The junk insurance was cheap but it was junk.

      • BIG GUY June 25, 2015 at 5:37 pm

KARENS, Obama made his “keep it if you like it” promise to everyone, not just to former college students. He was running for office and lied to deflect voter anger over Obamacare. Please recall that Obamacare caused the largest shift in the House of Representatives in history, over 75 seats to the Republicans in 2010. They’ve only expanded their margins since.
        .
Rationalize all you want for Obamacare , but the American public has spoken: voters have elected overwhelming Republican majorities in Congress. Liberals are aghast: how could the voters be so stupid? Don’t they know that gold plated health care for everyone is a constitutional right? And it will lower health care costs as well. The liberal minority who believe this are seriously out of touch.

        • KarenS June 25, 2015 at 5:57 pm

You are correct, Big Guy, the people have spoken and re-elected President Obama. I guess you haven’t read the policies you call “gold-plated”. They vary widely in cost and offered by multiple of insurance companies. Private enterprise I think it is called.

The “keep it if you like it” were offered to everyone but they were and continue to be junk policies.

  • anybody home June 25, 2015 at 2:17 pm

I’m asking a serious question here – Could somebody out there who has personally suffered negative consequences from Obamacare, please tell us what they were?

I haven’t heard any personal stories beyond “I’m against it” or political accusations. I’d really like to hear about negative consequences to people from this program. Specifics, please. Don’t quite some Facebook or media story. Tell your own. Thanks…

    • KarenS June 25, 2015 at 5:03 pm

Sorry, Anybody Home, I only have positive experiences like my niece who has Type 1 Diabetes and lived in fear of lifetime caps and being dropped from her health insurance. Her days are life and death without the proper care. And, another niece with a college student husband who could not qualify for student health insurance but was able to get a decent policy from the federal exchanges. And there is my son, who is one of the healthy ones and stepped up to the plate to buy insurance that subsidizes those who cannot afford it.

      • BIG GUY June 25, 2015 at 5:44 pm

KARENS, a government-sponsored and subsidized high risk insurance pool would address your niece’s situation. That’s what was needed, not gold plated coverage for everyone whether they needed or wanted it or not. Obamacare is a vast overkill for the issues that you raise.
        .
Allow me to quote Sen. Schumer (D-NY): “We had the power to do it in a way that would have simplified health care, made it more efficient and made it less costly and we didn’t do it,”

        • KarenS June 25, 2015 at 6:01 pm

Did the Republicans offer a high risk pool for my niece, Big Guy? Nope, just repeal and replace with tort reform, insurance across state lines, and now Orrin Hatch’s “tools”. I agree with Senator Schumer, we should have gone to single payer but no one had the stomach for it. ACA was the best we could do and it is a vast improvement over what we had.

        • fun bag June 25, 2015 at 6:21 pm

the R-party has blocked any type of health care reform for decades. You go on and on but you’re just an idiot…

    • BIG GUY June 25, 2015 at 5:52 pm

ANYBODY HOME, I could use up a lot of space describing those who have suffered negative consequences. In the interest of space, I’ll use only the example provided by KARENS above. She states that her “…son, who is one of the healthy ones…stepped up to the plate to buy insurance that subsidizes those who cannot afford it.” Liberals should be up in arms at the fact that the young and healthy are subsidizing older and in a number of cases wealthier folks. Where is the liberal outrage over this regressive tax on the young?

      • KarenS June 25, 2015 at 6:06 pm

Big Guy, that is the idea of the individual mandate, healthy adults subsidize the sick and those who cannot afford health care. As Judge Roberts so carefully explained today at the Supreme Court, it is one of the three legs of the ACA. It is personal responsibility, a value, that I think most people agree with. My son does.

        • BIG GUY June 25, 2015 at 8:09 pm

KARENS goes on the record in favor of younger, healthier people, usually with lower incomes, significantly overpaying for the health care of older, less healthy folks, often with higher incomes. That’s a far cry from the usual liberal demand for “economic justice.”
          .
I am all for the personal responsibility that KARENS values. I’ll take responsibility to choose my own health insurance policy without HHS bureaucrats forcing me to pay for coverage I don’t need or don’t want. Obstetric coverage for post menopausal women, anyone?

          • KarenS June 26, 2015 at 6:12 am

I’m not sure where Big Guy finds his information but his assertion that healthy adults will be “significantly overpaying” is just not true. My son’s policy is quite affordable and he is not getting any subsidies. Maybe Big Guy means the group that has opted out of insurance in the past, paying nothing, and then show up at the emergency room and have the rest of us pay for their treatment. I guess that group might have cause to complain since they are “forced” to finally take some personal responsibility. And, Big Guy, I’m all for means testing for Medicare.

        • BIG GUY June 26, 2015 at 9:15 am

“For [Obamacare] exchanges’ 2015 policies… “bronze- level” plans have an average deductible of $5,181 for individuals, up from $5,081 in 2014, according to a November report from HealthPocket , which publishes health insurance market analyses. Bronze plans generally cover 60% of consumers’ medical expenses.”
          .
Higher premiums coupled with higher deductibles have been widely reported by people who pay for their own plans and who were promised they “could keep their old policy.” How does your son feel about his $5000 deductible with coverage of only 60% of his medical expenses? This sounds like one of the “junk” plans you decried above.
