SANTA CLARA — An overheated wire in a Santa Clara residence Sunday resulted in an attic fire, causing $20,000-$30,000 worth of damage to the home.

Fire crews were dispatched to the home at 2846 W. Circle Drive about 4:15 p.m., Santa Clara City Fire Chief Dan Nelson said. Upon arrival, firefighters found a single-family home with smoke coming out the roof vents.

After entering the home, they found a fire in the attic.

“The homeowner reported the air conditioner had quit working,” Nelson said. “They were trying to find out why. They turned the breakers back on and the breakers tripped again. Then, they noticed an odor of smoke, and that’s when they called us.”

A wire overheated, Nelson said, and burned a section of the trusses and the insulation inside the attic.

Firefighters were unable to determine why the wire from the breaker box to the air conditioner overheated, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation, Nelson said.

While no injuries were reported as a result of the fire, Nelson said he estimated the fire caused $20,000 to $30,000 worth of damage to the home.
