FEATURE — Take a step back in time in this charming Old General Store in Veyo, from vintage candy bars to 1960s magazines, ink blotters and much more, you will feel as if you walked into a time capsule.
General Contractors of Artisan Custom Homes, Steve and Kristeen Streeter are collectors of vintage and antique items. The Streeters built the Old General Store on their property in Veyo as a fun hobby to enjoy together.
“This is more for our own pleasure and for display,” Steve Streeter said. “Certainly open to neighbors and friends, passers-by have stopped and we’ve given them tours.”
Steve Streeter has always dreamt of recreating a general store, he said, and the late 1950s and 1960s are of interest to him.
One of my favorite memories was the year (1976) when my family lived above Bob Hoyt’s Hague Market on Lake George, New York. It was the same year the Hague brook flooded, and it seemed like the whole town of Hague came up to our home above the market to watch the flood from the balcony.
My mom, Nancy Streeter, worked for Bob as a cashier at the Market that year. I remember trying to scrape pennies together to buy Swedish Fish and other penny candy. On occasion when I would just loiter penniless near the counter, Bob would slip me a few pieces of candy when my Mom wasn’t looking — many fond memories of the small town country store.
The Veyo project started with the one-of-a-kind doors, Steve Streeter said. The doors are from Monroe. The couple framed the Old General Store together and started gathering antique items over the past few months and some items over the years.
“He’s the one that comes up with the good ideas,” Kristeen Streeter said. “I just try and help him carry it out.”
Display Garage
The Streeters have also created a beautiful display in their garage. They use the space for movie night with their children, dance parties and just a space to relax in, Steve Streeter said.
The garage is filled with many vintage items from different eras; among those, a jukebox that plays records manually, a 1923 Harley Davidson JD, a 1938 Indian Scout and a restored 1968 Pontiac GTO that the Streeters enjoy driving.
“It’s fun because they just kind of glide,” he said. “Nothing like the old rides.”
Steve Streeter found another treasure in 1996, a 1969 Mustang Mach 1. He bought the car in New Jersey and drove it home in a snow storm on the New Jersey Turnpike, he said. It was originally yellow, but he stripped the car down and painted it blue.
The garage and Old General Store are just a few talents shown by the Streeters’ keen eyes. They are contractors by trade but would be willing to recreate something similar for anyone interested, Steve Streeter said.
