UHP sees success at 100 deadliest days midpoint with zero fatalities over weekend

ST. GEORGE — The Utah Governor’s Office announced Monday that the Utah Highway Patrol saw great success over the Pioneer Day holiday weekend with zero fatalities as we pass the midway point of the 100 deadliest days of summer.

Utah Highway Patrol troopers worked more than 400 shifts of enforcement activity over the July 24 holiday weekend, according to a statement from the Governor’s Office.

During that time, 2,648 traffic stops were conducted with 41 arrests for DUI. Troopers wrote 1,717 speeding tickets, 65 distracted driving citations and investigated 82 crashes.

“The UHP believes that the wearing of seat belts greatly minimized the seriousness of injuries in those crashes,” the statement said.

Troopers were also able to assist 543 motorists who were stranded and in need of help to get to their destinations.

“While this is one of the busiest travel holidays of the summer,” UHP Superintendent Danny Fuhr said, “our State Troopers were able to see a real reduction in serious crashes. We credit a lot of that reduction with the good choices that drivers are making by using seat belts and not driving while distracted.”

Fuhr went on to say that the Utah Highway Patrol goal of zero fatalities is achievable as the motorists work with law enforcement to do their part in staying safe.

The Utah Highway Patrol is continuing to educate the public to wear a seat belt, not drive while impaired, travel the speed limit and keep distractions separate from driving.
