Washington woman wins Kanab’s new half-marathon by a nose

KANAB — When Bruce Springsteen sang “Baby, we were born to run,” he might have been describing the Little Hollywood Half Marathon, which had its debut Saturday with a woman from Washington City crossing the finish line first.

Aubrey Johnson was the overall winner of Saturday’s race with a time of 1:29:31, beating out the race’s top male runner, Nate Bundy, by two seconds. Bundy finished with a time of 1:29:33.

The idea was hatched when four friends met and were training for the St, George Marathon. The friends loved training in Kanab and decided they should hold a 13.1-mile race in the Southern Utah city.

Saturday morning, the first runners left the starting line at 6 a.m., finishing about an hour and a half to three hours later. In that time, the participants ran through Coral Pink Sand Dunes Park, through Best Friends Animal Sanctuary and finished at the Little Hollywood Museum where they were greeted with a post-run breakfast of biscuits and gravy and were free to wander through the museum.

An even 100 people participated in today’s race, race organizer Danielle Ramsay said.

“I would consider it successful,” Ramsay said. “All of the good comments and positive feedback, I think people love it.”

Proceeds from today’s race went to Kanab’s symphony orchestra, the Symphony of the Canyons, to help funding for the upcoming year. The orchestra played at the post-celebration party to thank the participants for the financial boost.

Organizers hope to make this an annual event.

      That appears to have been fixed — we’re not sure exactly what happened. That wrong photo showed up on Facebook for some readers but not others were able to see the correct image.
