ST. GEORGE — Dignitaries, employees and neighborhood residents were on hand at Shadow Mountain Park in St. George Thursday as St. George-based Tonaquint Networks celebrated the opening of St. George’s first “fiberhood.” The Shadow Mountain community will be the first neighborhood in St. George to be fully served by Tonaquint’s residential fiber optics, offering up to 1 gigabit Internet speeds.
St. George Mayor Jon Pike and Rep. Lowry Snow welcomed Utah Lt. Gov. Spencer Cox to St. George to celebrate the occasion.
Cox was animated as he described what the advent of gigabit technology means to St. George.
“It truly is the foundation of the future,” Cox said. “I heard somebody say once that too often in education we’re preparing our kids for our past instead of their future. What we’re doing now is trying to future-proof education. We’re trying to future-proof economic development.”
Having a gigabyte of data available in the home is going to pave the way for the future of the workplace, the lieutenant governor said.
“We’re not going to have the same type of business structure 25, 50 years from now that we have today,” Cox said. “I think most people will be doing most of their work from their homes. And they’re going to be able to do that for many, many years to come with the fiber that’s here now.”
Cox was joined by Pike and Snow, along with representatives from Tonaquint Network, to ceremonially cut the ribbon in celebration of St. George’s first “fiberhood.”
