SALT LAKE CITY – Gov. Gary R. Herbert has authorized the lowering of the flag of the United States of America and the State of Utah at all state facilities in observance of the two tragic incidents in Hildale and Zion National Park.
The flags will be lowered to half-staff at sunset Thursday until sunset Friday to honor the lives lost and serve as a tribute to the first responders who came to their aid.
“I join with other Utahns in mourning the tragedy in Washington County and Zion National Park,” Gov. Herbert said. “Jeanette and I send our thoughts and prayers to the families and friends of those who have lost loved ones. I thank the first responders, volunteers and other officials involved in the recovery effort.”

It’s a beautiful gesture to fly our flags at half-staff in respect and mourning for all of the victims of this tragedy. Well done.
Well said accountable.
I figured you’d be in favor of disrespecting the flag.
I’m sure you’ll blast me as bad guy but this violates protocol for lowering the flag.http://www.usflag.org/nff.half.staff.html.
It is a tragedy of huge proportions and the Govenor has the authority but it is not intended for circumstances like these. You may not like the message but I’m sure you’ll take it out on the messenger.
Oh I’m sure he will
And let’s not forget the third tragedy of the young man apparently washed away between Hurricane and Washington. (Was that on the Fort Pearce road somewhere?)
Here is our updated report on that incident, Steve:
