Book Festival hosts panel discussion on social media’s impact on literacy

ST. GEORGE — The St. George Book Festival is offering a free community forum on social media’s impact on literacy Wednesday at 6 p.m.

The National Assessment of Adult Literacy defines literacy as “using printed and written information to function in society, to achieve one’s goals and to develop one’s knowledge and potential.” The illiteracy skill level is based on a fourth-grade level.

The reason for the reference to the fourth-grade level mentioned above is that in nearly all U.S. schools, the only reading taught after the fourth grade is remedial reading. If that is all they can read, however, they are functionally illiterate.

This panel discussion will tackle questions related to how social media is helping or exacerbating the problem.

The discussion will take place at Dixie Applied Technology College, 610 S. Airport Road, in St. George. Panel members include Lenore Madden, Casie Forbes, Stace Hall, Kristy Pike and students of DSU.

Events being held in conjunction with the 10th Annual St. George Book Festival continue Wednesday as authors and readers will enjoy a wide selection of activities and special events.

Starting off, Pulitzer Nominee and Award-winning author Russell Estlack will be speaking about his book, “Code Talkers of World War One” at the Southern Utah Veterans Home, 160 N. 200 East, in Ivins.

Wednesday will feature League of Utah Writer’s Award-Winning author David W. Smith, creator and author of the top-selling Hidden Mickey novels, mysteries about Walt Disney and Disneyland, starting at 4 p.m., at Barnes and Noble in St. George. Smith, also owner of Synergy Books Publishing, will be speaking about writing and publishing, describing the keys to success in the writing industry, as well as sharing insider secrets about Disneyland and Walt Disney.

Joining Smith will be author Lynn Woodward, who will be signing and discussing his new book, “Cleaning the Kingdom,” amazing insider stories about the inner workings of Disneyland.
